Right, I've just spoken to hubby who had a conversation with the head of year earlier. Upshot is that they cited data protection in that they couldn't tell us what had happened to deal with the girl who assaulted her (who had been "off sick" today.)

Hubby has told them in no uncertain terms that this was going to be reported to the police, and that they would need to make sure that the CCTV footage was kept for them.

I've just sat down with DD as she's had company this evening- she's wavering a little (I think she's nervous of repercussions) but she's OK. I was bullied right through school so I know the effects it can have.

We will be calling the police first thing. Two friends were with her, they've given "incident reports" to the school, and would be prepared to give statements to the police if need be.

Thanks again for all the advice and support- I will pass on all the well wishes. xx

I wouldn't leave it to the school to call the police as all they may do is ask the local PCSO attached to the school to come in and 'chat' with the girls. Its a complaint of assualt you need to make as others have said

funny how times change i was beaten pushed through a plate glass window stabbed with a compass and no-one ever called the police

There was a boy in the class below me at school who was stabbed in the arm with a compass. The tiny little wound got infected and he suffered some muscle death and nerve damage - the police were extremely involved and this was 20 years ago.

OP, call the police and make sure the CCTV footage has not disappeared. I'd also make an appointment with the year head and tell them you would like a copy of their anti-bullying policy.

    Exactly.

You may also like to try to explain to your little girl that there are less chances of repercussions through escalating this than just letting it go as the gang will get stronger, braver and push it further and further.

My heart goes out to her, I do hope this is sorted quickly. I also hope its not too late to turn these 'gang girls' around as they dont have a hope of a future at the moment.

I just wanted to ditto what everyone else has said, call the police. Your daughter will of course be wavering a bit as she has been so terribly intimidated. Your strength will help her, even in the morning when she might have calmed downed. This needs to be sorted now, before anything worse happens. I hope she is okay :)

Grrr. Hubby is on the phone to the police- just how hard do you have to push them to actually do something? Apparantly, it's local police policy to have stuff at school dealt with via the govenors.

We eventually have an incident number- and are reiterating to the school that they need to keep the images. It seems everyone just wants to brush it under the carpet...and needless to say there's been no email with that anti bullying policy yet.

Maybe you should write a letter to the school informing them that the incident was reported to police and asking them to confirm that they have got the CCTV images and they are going to keep them safe until needed by police.

Possibly - hand deliver with the witness or/and post it 'signed for' delivery, just to make sure school is not going to 'lose' the data or say they have never had it. Also - this way you would have some evidence, that you have requested CCTV data to be kept and they can't say 'you never asked us to'. Keep copies!

It might be policy not to go into the schools but does criminal law not apply in school grounds? What if someone was dealing heroin in school?

Creased, I was bullied at school, I study Education and school policies,I don't have much life experience but I urge you to try and do some of the following.
Record all phone calls, go to school reception and sit there until someone see's you (I understand if you both have jobs this can't be done). Keep calling the police make sure they understand you're serious. Ask for the schools Anti-Bullying policy (If they don't have one, you can also take that futher).
The best way of getting action from a school is sadly threatening to go to the papers, they will not want to be seen as a bad school.
    Can you keep us updated?
