right have done the e-mail backup (clever me) looked on old PC all essentials are there but Helper disconected RW but that can be sorted later at least my stuff is recoverable. i am going to print off the link you gave me in post 2 have a read and take it from there. if i do this will it leave it with all the softwear on that came with it and does it matter if i haven't got a restore disc. Also i know to unplug printer etc but what about my broadband connection do i disconect that as well?i'm living in a parallel universe0

hooray have got rid of the VTAgent message at startup it was something to do with ntl still have the notepad though which says this
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
any ideas?
I tried word again and it asked for the cd from works so i did that and now it works fine as far as i can see !!
Don't know if i should try the total reboot at startup the bios screen literally flashes on and the is a grey bar in the middle of the screen not a blue one is this right? and would i just hit ctrl F11 when i see this screen?
I am going to go through all my stuff delete what i don't need and copy the rest onto a CD till i get more of your advice - thanksi'm living in a parallel universe0 -

You could try running SFC /SCANOW
from "start" then "run" then type SFC /SCANOWEx forum ambassador

is this PC connected to the internet ??
I'd be interested to see your desktop (can do this over MSN Messenger) so I can see with my own eyes whats there, and check a few things
I can do that tomorrow night , if you are happy for me to do this then send me a private message and I'll give you my MSN details (i'm not going to post them here for obvious reasons !!)
