in Techie Stuff
Having bought a Dell 5150 from BT shop and due to illness only just got round to setting it up - we borrowed a copy of Office put that on all seemed ok. Only thing left to do was transfer all documents, pictures etc from old PC thats where the trouble started my DD decided to get her friend who knows about computers to come and set it all up for me as a surprise !! after 3 days of trying to copy my old stuff to CD and DVD and putting my old hard drive into his PC to "import" stuff to there he said it was finally done but that he was re-installing Office as i hadn't got a full version - situation now is dire my DD and friend have !!!!!!ed off to Cornwall and my Dell does all sorts of weird things i have odd messages at start-up including a notepad document that won't delete, Word will not run it keeps asking for the key number, all sorts of stuff is in the recycle bin i daren't empty it, basically it looks like its been thrown up in the air and everything has fell where its landed. I don't know what i'm doing i just want my PC how it was when i bought it - my old stuff is on my old PC (hopefully) is there anyway i can get it back to its oringinal state, he didn't make any discs when it was first set up "because it takes about 4 hours" I am absolutely distraught i need to use it for my job and at the moment cant do any work, my old PC is in bits and i just look at it all and cry can anyone advise me what i should do

use windows system restore
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
to go back to a restore point before the helper had a go at it
you could try uninstalling office first to see if that cures it
Dells also have a restore partition, hit CTRL and f11 on boot up as the Dell blue line appears at the top of the scree, does a factory restore

thank you i am printing out all the stuff suggested i will check my old PC (if i can get it back together) and then have a go. The problem is i can't afford to lose my documents and at the moment with Word not working i can't even print them out - i can't beleive DD has done this i know her intentions were good but i am really peed off!!i'm living in a parallel universe0

the windows restore will set it without loosing documents
the DELL restore will wipe it all
worse case Maplins do a USB ide connector that will enable you to plug the old hard drive in the new PC via a USB port, costs about £25Ex forum ambassador

"helper" had said he was going to clone the drives but they had different connections that was why he had to copy stuff to his drive??? the only stuff i wanted from my old one was the documents and TBH i can't understand why after 3 days its still not right - i am so angry i cannot bear to talk to DD or her friend about it i just feel such a !!!!!! for not knowing what i'm doing or more to the point what he's doing - all this and i've got the wireless connection thing yet to deal with (DD has her new Dell working just great!!)
p.s i can't find Office to uninstall it everything seems all over the placei'm living in a parallel universe0 -
Done the system restore - sooo much better have got word back so at least can earn some money!! still got the messages at start up. the copy of Office that i installed is on there (not genuine) and when i open certain things it asks for Premium Disc SR100 something or other and prepares to install - so guru where am i at now can i do anything else to get rid of the glitches - thanks muchly by the wayi'm living in a parallel universe0

uninstall word and replacing it with open office will sort out one problem, I think its a dodgy copy of office and its failing the verification process , which is why it keeps aking for the disks
if you do me a hijacthis log
follow the instructions here , download is on the left,
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
and copy and paste the log back here so i can see whats happening when the PC starts up, I'll be able to work out whats opening notepad hopefullyEx forum ambassador

Also after doing the system restore i have a folder icon on my desktop with 8 files in it that are to do with my e-mail but it won't let me open them - can i just delete this or is it something else?i'm living in a parallel universe0 -
we will use msconfig to remove some start up items
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
you need to find and untick these items
VTAgentReboot.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
then let the PC rebootEx forum ambassador
