I can only right click on IE. When I try to open it I get the entry point message again.
I've noticed that after that now the following appears:
Can't find C:/Docs & Settings/Owner/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5/J3204wom/www2.aol.co[1]htm. Make sure you typed the name correctly, etc.
When I looked under C:/Docs & Settings/Owner/ I couldn't see a folder entitled Local Settings.
Could this be relevant??0 -

also found this about a corrupt cache that the above will not fix
Dealing with a corrupt Cache
In many cases when you have trouble accessing a site, pages don't load properly - such as when you click Refresh (F5) then the page loads, this indicates a corrupt cache. Either a corrupt folder or the hidden "index.dat" is damaged. The problem arises when you use the "Windows Method" (above) this does not in many cases repair a corrupt cache folder or does not resize the index.dat. It continues to grow and grow in size.
Completely Deleting the Temporary Internet Files and index.dat (manual method)
XP/2K users (WinME/98 users see below)- Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder(s) and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges) - Hint: You can also press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" twice at the Welcome screen to bring up the Administrator account or download: "AddAdministrator.reg" to add the Administrator to the Welcome screen.
- To use: right-click and select: "Save Target As", locate the reg file and right-click and select: Merge Ok the prompt and reboot. URL="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321305"]more info[/URL
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files"
Note: where "username" is the account or profile that you suspect is corrupt. Remember to delete the folder (Content.IE5) not just the contents. A new "Content.IE5" and a set of random named sub-folders (4) and index.dat will be created on restart. You can not delete these folders from your own account.TIP: If you do not want to delete the cache manually, you can use CCleaner (freeware) instead.

bit further down that says
So, what do you do here?
Skip any step that deals with a problem that doesn't effect you- Assuming that none of the spyware removal programs listed above helps you, the very first thing you need to do is download and run HijackThis. Put a check mark next to every search and start page setting it lists which you haven't put there yourself and choose fix. Do the same for any hosts file entries. If it lists anything as O5, O6, or O7*, fix those as well. Please ask for advice at the forums before using HijackThis to change anything else.
*Note: Spybot S&D, Start Page Guard, Settings Sentry, and similar programs may provide options to lock settings against unauthorized changes. If you have these options enabled, HijackThis will detect that as a restrictions hijack. Disable those options before scanning with HijackThis. - Second, you have to put Internet Options back into the control panel. Do a file search and look for a file named "control.ini". Open it in Notepad. You may see something like this:
[don't load]
inetcpl.cpl=yes
you may need to download ewido + spybot on another PC , burn to CD and install and run themEx forum ambassador

It's getting a bit technicaL & scary & I wonder if we're going off in tangents.
To sum up so far;
I've uninstalled all of the AOL stuff.
Every problem I have starts with the following;
"The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfobyURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll."
Is all you've suggested aimed at this are are we missing something?
It seems that if we can suss this entry point issue it may answer my prayers.
What do you think?
Thanks0 -
I think that the problem is a Malware infection now but first try this :-
click on Start then Run and then type
sfc /scannow
then click "ok" and this will check all the DLL files against the originals
if that does not do it then you will need to edit the registry to do this.
Go to the start menu > RUN command > type REGEDIT and press enter.
before you do anything click on File and then Export and save a copy of your registry in case you do something wrong (you won't be we will play safe)
Navigate through the registry keys until you get to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load\. Look and see if inetcpl.cpl is listed. If it is, delete the entry for it and log off.
I've "googled" that error message and it's come up with nothing at all
the regedit should give us back the Internet options in control panel
are you able to connect to MSN messenger ??Ex forum ambassador

Can't do the scannow as it asks to insert the Service Pack 2 CD, which I don't have (although under My Computer propoerties it's already there).
I did the REGEDIT thing but the inetcpl.cpl isn't listed.
