Hi Guys
I've just bought a used CPU & when I try to get onto AOL it gets to the home page & every time I try to open another link or website it comes up with a windows message titled as above with the following message:
"The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfobyURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll"
When I click on OK another box comes up referring to the fact it can't find C:/Documents and Settings/Owner/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IEVG2AYHIT/www2aol.co[1].html
Also when I try to open another page the windows box appears as though I'm trying to open an unknown/possibly dodgy file and asks me if I want to save, open or cancel. When I click open the boxes stated above appear.
The first message that appeared referred to:
GLJ41.tmp has encountered a problem & needs to close. It then does the windows reporting error thing, apparently to no avail.
I'm just about tearing my hair out.
Can anyone help please, please, please?
Thanks

I'm grateful for your advice but I can't open any of the sites you suggested as every time I try I get a frame with the title on and the windows box saying:
"The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfobyURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll"
It won't let me do anything else.
Any ideas?
Thanks0 -

This seems to be something to do with running the IE7 Beta. Have you installed that at all?
You could try this, http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
IE Fix Utility Direct Download:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/IEFix.zip
If your DLL is corrupt, you may want to do a CHKDSK of your C: drive to fix any corrupt files. Open a command prompt (Start-Run-type CMD-click OK) and type chkdsk c: /f. Type Y to agree to let it run on next reboot, and then reboot.
There's another built-in XP utility to check system files, and that's System File Checker (SFC.EXE). From a command prompt, try sfc /scannow.

Or you could try and install Opera Browser:
ftp://mirrors.dedipower.com/opera/win/900/en/Opera%209%20Eng%20Setup.exe
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Does windows update work (control panel, security center)?
Does system restore work?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Hi all
In answer to some of your suggestions;
The security center says it is currenlty unavailable as it's been stopped, so I reboot as suggested to no avail.
Although I can't download anything you suggest as everytime I try the message "The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfobyURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll" appears, I do have a working laptop (which I'm writing this on) that's fine.
Is there anything I can download onto the laptop then copy onto my memory stick onto the PC that's not working?
After the procedure entry point message appears and I click OK several times another message appears saying it can't find certain files and folders in c:/Docs & settings/Owner/Windows/etc.
It seems to be looking for something that isn't there.
Does this shed any light?0 -

Are you sure, when you click on control panel, security center, what message do you get exactly?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

The security center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.0 -
Have you checked that the service is set to "automatic" in services?.
Go to start/run/type in the box services.msc
right clcik on the security center service and select properties, select the startup type and set to automaticEx forum ambassador

Hi both
OK, the security center is now working and tells me that the windows firewall, auto updates and virus protection are on and then up pops that old windows box saying:
The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfobyURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WINNET.dll.
