    Thanks Elly.
I'm under rheumatology, but not really. My consultant doesn't feel comfortable treating girls, apparantly, and so isn't treating me.
A rheumatologist nurse said she'd phone back today, but instead out of hours did...

!!!!!!??? How can he refuse to treat you bccause of gender? Is it on religious grounds? Even so, I don't see that he can refuse to treat you because you are female. Elly, you must know more about this, but does the hospital not have a duty of care towards patients?

I'm outraged frankly that he would leave you suffering. You should be complaining to PALS (patient liaison) and your MP.

Saucy I will help you find advocacy support in your area if you want me to. there do seem to be some round there that are not mental health but physical disabilities. People nearly always talked to patients differently when they had me in with them as an advocate. which is not good in that they should be doing it anyway but useful if you can get the support.

i think you might find its more because of age rather than sex, rhuematoid athritis can set in fom 10 + but once children reach a certain age in the hospital system they are deemed adults but really should stay under care of paeds its one of those red tape things . think this is possibly what he meant .it happens a lot with the kids with cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy some places are lucky enough to have a teenage ward but not many. hospital usually will admit 14-15 yr olds on to surgical ask babymoo think you will find this happened to her with the gynae problems .
as far as vit d concerned couple of the meds for rhuematoid can cause stops absorption but poor diet as highlighted by jo and lack of sunshine not going outdoors and general lack of uk sunshine thats what i meant about spain

i'm not sure the getting angry thing works much in nhs what i do think is the diary and written questions will.
health professionals often see a diary as a document collected by pts when they are getting ready to complain as in evidence and can often lead to better pt care more often though as i said long term conditions cause depression and poor memory often pts will tell you they werent told stuff but when you go through diary it is there in black and white in their own handwriting so starts to instill a bit of confidence in the system

i know jo that when its someone as sensible as you the advocacy thing can work ,but some i have met think its their right to rule the pts life and the pts opinion often gets blurred .i think if saucy has support of oh then that is his role and hopefully saucy will start to cope as she is going to have her illness probably lifetime and needs to find coping mechanisms for it thats why i asked if she had highlighted any emotional problems as cognitive therapy seems to work best in this area but if pts dont tell us we cant do anything about it .
my hubby was ill and basically i had to do this i have to say they made one error after another however he is a very private person and his history telling was poor so had to butt in we however managed to get a consultant who took care of him have to say it was no 3 we asked not to see first one again and 2nd one referrred us on

You know even with years working in the nhs, being assertive in my work and being an advocate for many people. I still got completely overwhelmed with one of my maternity appointments and didn't ask questions that were on my list because they were busy and rushing.
It was DH who said hang on we really want to ask some more questions.
It can be hard to deal with stuff like this especially when you are feeling rubbish to start off with. Often the nhs can respond better to those who are on top of things and what they need etc which means sometimes people who are in need of more support (even in terms of getting the best out of their appointment) go home without it.
Some consultants and doctors are great at this and others are not. If you have one who isn't then it is more work for you.
But you are not alone in your experiences Saucy.
