This is where the Law is sometimes an *ss.

I understand where ivader is coming from. I wouldnt be happy if someone opened my mail.

But in fairness if my mail was so important to me I should have either had it redirected or notified of my change of address.

I understand that it would SEEM to be to the detriment of the original addressee because your snitching(for want of a better word) on them and providing details that they may want to have kept private.

But isnt it to your detriment to NOT inform them that they are no longer at that address. Admittedly moving on from the rights or wrongs of opening the mail in the first place.

I'm ok my dog opens all mail delivered to the wrong person. He's so neat aswell

I dont think its to their detriment to inform a DCA that they are no longer there but it may be to their detriment to pass on new address
  • I really wish someone with the knowledge would actually give some good advice on how to stop debt collectors from calling my number which has no relation to the previous home owners. Apparently, debt collectors do a reverse address look up and get our name and phone number. It doesn't have anything to do with the family that lived here FIVE years ago!

We also get their mail occassionally and promptly trash it. We don't know the people, where they live or whether they are alive or dead. And don't care really. Just because we live in the house they use to live in, should not give DC's the right to call and harrass us.

    It's wrong and it's frustrating.

I can only tell you what my daughter did with some success when she was in your situation. she refuses to be in victim mode and was very proactive in her approach to get these people off her back.

Firstly she downloaded a copy of the land registry documentation to show she owned the property now and emailed this to each collection agency that contacted her.

Secomdly she contacted the conveyancing solicitor of the previous owners and asked that they contact their client regarding the harassment

Thirdly she googled the ex owner found his business address and emailed him directly telling him she would be contacting a lawyer.

Fourthly and I think probably most importantly she got the wife's telephone number from a neighbour and explained to the husband in hier email that she would be making contact with her each time she was harrassed

It all stopped very quickly after that!
