Try calling the Royal mail, Postcomm or even the police and ask them if it's OK to open mail not addressed to you and see what they have to say. They won't say "if you think you have a good reason" or "if you don't intend to do it at the persons detriment". They will say don't do it.0

Royal mail considers a letter/postal packet to be correctly delivered if it arrives through the letter box on the home/address intended regardless of name on letter v's name on door.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

OP, get yourself registered on the electoral roll pronto and then if you do get any letters, readdress them to the agent that handled the sale of the property. Keep identification at hand should anyone knock on the door.0

where does it say that?
the item is delivered, the resident can return it but are under no obligation to do so0 -
They tell you what you should do when you get a letter not intended for you even when the address is correct. Not doing anything might be an option, opening it isn't.0

Where does it say that?
Or am I missing the 'DO NOT OPEN' part?
Ivader, you're onto a loser here, this subject has been discussed so many times, and every time d!ckwits who insist it's breaking the law to open letters have been proved wrong, for the love of god give it up.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
'If you keep getting wrongly delivered letters or parcels, let Royal Mail know and they’ll deal with the problem.'
there is a little bit of tet from your link. My address keeps getting post for a female name that has either given this address as a mistake or lived her sometime pre 2003. RTS wasn't working so i contacted royal mail and they say if the address on the envelop is the address the mail was delivered to then the mail concerned is not wrongly delivered as it has reached its intended destination IE the place it was addressed too.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
Does it matter?
I have an habit of opening the letters without reading the name on it (stems from my bachelor days) and I've once found a debt collector's letter regarding an unpaid ebay purchase. When I looked at it with confusion, I realized it was addressed to someone I've never heard of. I called the bayliff and told them no such person ever lived here (I bought new build) and they've thanked me for informing them and never heard from them again.
Perhaps you could make a habit of opening letters without reading the name as well?0 -
If you receive post with your address but a different name, cross out your address, circle the return address (if there is one), write “not known at this address” on the envelope and repost it. If you know the person’s correct address, cross out your address, write the new address on the envelope and repost it.
This is what the Royal mail tell you to do.0
