Well Im officially a Senior Citizen

Hit 60 last week and will be getting a pension of £84 per week which Im having paid monthly.

|Thing is I shall carry on working part time - I earn just below the level for NI and tax (work for OH/am a director of his limited co). I also have some BS savings and after years of not filling in a tax form, I now get a letter asking me all my details and how much Im likely to earn in interest in the next year. How do you work it all out? Ive got accounts all over the place because of the security thing.:(

Ive filled in my bus pass form and a train card and Boots over 60s club. Any other benefits please guys?

I also hit the big 60 last week.
Got an old fashioned 60 watt light bulb from OH, labelled "to the light of my life"

Bus pass applied for, free prescriptions (v. useful), plus free swimming.
  • Also ask in any stores about discounts for Senior Citizens, Boots is a good one and B&Q. There's a thread about this somewhere.

I too an a very new State Pensioner, having become 60 at the end of January and received my first weekly Retirement Pension payment on February 1st. :)

If the pension you refer to is the State pension, be aware that they don't pay monthly but every 4 weeks. This can cause problems with Direct debits etc.

Receiving a weekly amount from my State pension still makes me happy. Payment and no more being a work slave!

    Free swimming? Not everywhere.

This is what used to be the local authority swimming pool near us: http://www.clementshall.co.uk/swimRetirement.php

As you can see, no mention of free swimming.

This is where I go: https://www.swimmingtales.co.uk It's much better for learners and for aqua-aerobics because it's 1.1 m all over. But it does cost money!

That's cos the council opted to not apply for free swimming.

http://www.culture.gov.uk/what_we_do/sport/5810.aspx for where you can swim for free. Local authorities had to apply for it. You could try a neighbouring authority.

Swimming is one of the best all round exercises, however do remember that it's non-weight bearing and won't have a positive effect on bone density unless you take part in aqua-fitness activities where resistance is increased.

I didn't say I was concerned about bone density, but yes, I do go to aqua-aerobics once a week. The pool at SwimmingTales is ideal for both learning and exercising, because it's all one depth.

I'm going there for a 'crash course' the week after Easter, one hour's swimming lesson every evening Monday - Friday.

Apparently you get it paid in advance instead of arrears if it's weekly, but seeing as our other income comes in monthly or four-weekly I thought it would be good to have some come in every few days. Monday comes round really quickly!
