mine picks up satellites in 20-30 seconds now.i place mine in back garden in open space with clear view of sky just before leaving for where im going.
it takes a lot longer to pick up satellites if waiting with it in car or if you drive away before it has locked onto a satellite.
i have upgraded to firmware 3.10 from firmware 2.70 from garmins home site and this has now given me european towns to navigate to on major european roads.not down to street level as in uk.just go to cities and type in european town you want to go to.
postcode searches go down to 7 and not 5 as claimed on comets site. ie dw247dr as opposed to dw247. but dont foget to put space between dw24 and the 7dr

Hello it is possible to have french or European maps for this system, if so where are they obtained from. Also how quick is it to pick up satelites from switching on and does it have a postcode locator? thanks

Yes it has 7 digit postcode and it takes about a minute or so to get a position provided you are not moving and have a clear view of the sky, if you then switch it off then on again no more than 2/3 hours later its much quicker, all to do with the data it requires from the satellite, same with all GPS systems.
If you want to use it around Europe the costs start to add up, its about £90 for one european country on a memory card. You'd be better spending a bit more for a unit with euro maps included, e.g. Nuvi, C510D, tomtom 510.

you can also change settings so it avoids unpaved roads,u turns, toll roads, carpool lanes.
and you can change it to from fastest route to shortest distance route.
and when in view map mode it shows your current speed which shows how inaccurate your speedometer really is on your car.

I use TomTom on my phone at the moment and although its good doesn't always work perfecty to though a simple one box trick may be the answer.

    'Heads-Up' [as some say].
Bought one @ Halfords last night [25/07]; £129.99.
    Comet price today £99.99.
Halfords tonight price-matched for me and refunded the difference.
    Thank you Halfords.

    But..............
All my 'local' Comet stores are out of stock [40 mile radius].
I mentioned to a friend that she might buy one @ Halfords then ask for a 'price-match'.
She did indeed trot off to buy one from H'fds [20mins. after my price-match] to be met with..........
'Sorry madam, this unit is now obsolete and is no longer available'.

    However;
When I was speaking to Comet 'central command' [Hull] this early evening to confirm that the web-price was also the store price [for my Halfords price-match evidence] he tells me that units in stores are nearly exhausted and there are a 'couple of hundred' left in the web store.

I'm luvvin this bit of kit, dead simple, no clutter, no mp3 stuff, doesn't take photo's, only two buttons and deadly accurate even on 'C' roads.
    [I'm in the Lake District].

[lol]; ie it takes the same route that I would have used !!!
    rgds.,
    baff.
