Do Garmin provide one free update for maps on a unit? The maps for my area are very out of date including some roads which have been made into cycle paths and footpaths years ago!

    Thanks
Hi, sorry, I was away for the weekend and wasn't able to get net access.

The latest mapping is V8, if you have this mapping I'm afraid the next update won't be till early 2007. When this happens there will be a charge, although at this time I don't know what this charge will be.

To find your map version go to Settings/Map/Map Info

This happened to quite a few people (including myself) when the i3 was originally £99.99 from Somerfield in January. The answer is to leave it in the garden for up to a couple of hours until it locks onto the satellites for the first time. Luckily you never have to do this again once it's found them; it should take less than a minute on future occasions (but probably won't work in your house - it has to have a clear view of at least 3 satellites which is unlikely indoors).

    Hi guys,

It takes on average up to 45 minutes to get your initial satellite lock, make sure you're outside with a clear view of the sky and no large buildings as this can cause rebounded signals. The reason for this long initial lock is the unit has to build it's almanac data - location, date, time etc.... Remember using it by a window means it can only connect to satellites visable within your window, if they are in the sky but on the other side of the house you will get no lock.

Heat reflective windscreens in the car will hamper GPS strength you may need an external antenna if this is the case.

Anywhere in Yorkshire (pref. West) still have these i3 units @ £99.95 ?
  • Best price i've found is now £124.99 @ Carphone Warehouse inc free next day delivery.
  • could you use quidco with carphone warhouse purchasing an i3?
As on quidco it states "10% for accessory, ringtone or other sale"

As this would lower the price to £112.49, being the cheapest available!
  • !!!!!! - forgot about quidco :(

When this was posted on the site I went to my local comet to try and get one. The salesman said they sold out in a few hours, so I decided to order mine on line from Comet, with free delivery if you can wait a week! It came today after 2 days of waiting for Parcel Force to turn up. Anytime between 8 am and 6 pm they said and it arrives at 5:45!

I'd just like to thank all the people who have put info on here with links. Managed to install POI stuff and camera data (£2 subscription from GPSWORLD). After an evening of playing with I have discovered it would not take too much effort to make your own POI file , as it is basically just an excel speadsheet with co ordinates, you can get these using Streetmap.co.uk .

A brill bit of kit for £99 . I have seen Tom Tom etc but think this is just as good, if not better. I think it is has a great advantage being small , so you can easily put it in your pocket when you leave the car.

Finally, I see people had problems finding the sats to get started. I found they loaded in a couple of mins no problems.

Btw anyone used the xImage software to transfer images to form the i3? Not quite sure why anyone would want to do this?

Sorry if this is a silly question but what do you mean by " once its locked on". I got mine today , connected to computer via usb and its picked up my address. I haven't used it in the car yet but how do I know its picked up all necessary details from satelite.
