We used to live in a flat above a couple who had a young baby, and although we heard him crying it really wasn't ever a problem - babies cry, fact of life. Tbh, it was more of a problem when the wife took the baby out and the husband played 'Billie Jean' and 'Earthsong' on a loop, very loudly and for hours on end ... We've had worse neighbours since and trust me, I'd go with a crying baby any day.

I also panic about my children (4.5 & 9 months) making a noise and disturbing my one neighbour (who is fantastic).

When it's been a particularly noisy few days, like last week when dd2 was teething, I pop a note through next door to apologise and leave her a bottle of wine on the doorstep. We've never actually had any complaints and our neighbour says she rarely hears the kids, but I still apologise in case she's just being polite :o

  • I used to worry a bit about my daughters crying as my neighbours were not the nicest of people, they would do their DIY at night but they were at work all day.they moved and the new family had a newborn,6 weeks later i did too.Now they are around 7 and 9 months and seem to take it in turns to scream the house down, usually between 2 and 3 am.As soon as my son stops crying theirs starts and vice-versa,it is hilarious sometimes.Makes it more bearable sometimes as it lets me know im not the only person in the world that has to deal with it.lol,as we often think we are.
  • after screaming blue murder she finally passed out in my arms for 20 minutes! She got herself into such a state that I laid down on the bed with her and we havent done that since she was 10 weeks old as my nan said I shoudnt do it otherwise she will never sleep on her own
To be honest I have had it this week and have already told the husband if he dares to go to the pub tonight I will walk out
He is leaving th office early and I am going to go for a drive in the car and then to a freinds for wine I feeel like walking out altogether at the moent - this is what lack of sleep dpoes to me!

Oh hun, I know how it feels- my demon daughter has has nearly 2 weeks of only sleeping a couple hours at night. I'm knackered and irritable, my house is wrecked and I just want to cry. My hubby is great and comes home from work & cooks tea, helps tidy up and has Taz whilst I have a bath by myself.

I find that getting out of the house for a good walk with the buggy- even if it is raining- really helps. Gives me time to think.

BTW it does get easier :p

  • I wouldn't worry about the neighbours at all.

Sorry but I don't understand where the lack of sleep you mention is coming from? You said DD has slept from 6pm til 6-7am since she was tiny but has recently been waking up at 6.30am and 8.00pm. How does this interfere with your sleep?

It could be teething, or maybe she is hungry. Have you started weaning her yet, maybe she is starting to need more substance to keep her going through the night. Or if it is the radio waking her up, maybe you could have a classical baby CD playing in her room for the evening, to minimise the noise from downstairs.

If you need an hour to yourself then I recommend you put your DD on the Gina Ford routine. It's strict but it means that you get a guaranteed hour in the morning, 2.5 hours in the afternoon and 12 hours at night when they are sleeping. The routine has been an absolute godsend to me.

I would go and have a chat with the neighbours. They will either say it doesn't bother them and you can stop worrying about that one aspect of the problem. Or they will say it is bothering them and the two of you can work out any solutions and they will probably appreciate the fact that you were thinking about them.

I admit I find it hard to cope with the noise of kids as I don't have any. I also work long hours so am desperate for some peaceful sleep when I get home. When the child below me was going through a noisy period my neighbours and I worked out which bit of my flat was over the child's bedroom. I moved my storage trunks over that area and it did deaden the sound a little.
