Anyone worry what the neighbours think re baby..??

Hi All

I have a 6 month old and we live on the top floor of a big house, about to do a loft conversion so our daughter can have her own room and then we will sell.

I am starting to lose the plot a little so wanted to share...

Everytime our baby cries or screams I freak out over what the neighbours downstairs think - for example when she wakes at 6.30am and has her bottle I try and put her back down aroun 8.30am as she gets cracnky, I know that downstairs work shifts (they are a lovely young couple that have just brought the place and moved in) so I try to not make any noise, anyway this week our daughter has woken up every night around 8pm crying, having gone into the bedroom I can hear that downstairs have the radio on really loud, last night she screamed the place down for half an hour before I could get her to settle, by this point I was crying myself

This morning I have gone to put her down and she has screamed blue murder and for the first time I thought "Sod this she can scream, she holds her hands up for me to pick her up when I go in so I shut her in the bedroom, shut the living room door and sat by the door crying.....hey presto in 12 minutes she had passed out"

Should I do this and not worry about the neighbours, they have said before they never ever hear her and I thought "Yeah thats cos I try and not let her cry!":(

I am sure they understand you have a baby, babies do cry after all.

Don't worry about what your neighbors think, i am sure they will tell you soon enough if there was a problem

I live in a flat, when you buy or rent one you do so knowing that you may hear some noise from the neighbours. I hear music and TV from next door, a barking dog from next door on the other side and lots of DIY noise from upstairs who are knocking two flats into one.

It doesn't bother me, people still need to live their lives, you can't be constantly silent just because you're in a flat! As long as you aren't deliberately annoying them (and letting your baby cry sometimes doesn't count as deliberate) you're fine.

can the grandparents have her for a night so you can have some 'You' time?

a good nights undisturbed sleep will do wonders for you.

my son was the perfect baby up until 6 months, then it all went out the window with bedtime...

People do make allowances if they know there is a little baby,

    good luck

    If this is upsetting you.

Knock on their door and say sorry if they can hear the baby, but she's teething. They will probably tell you that they don't even notice.

Then go and buy yourself some Ashton and Parsons powders and some chocolate. And use the former on your child, the latter on yourself.

    You sound very stressed.

At Xmas, our neighbours sent us a card, and wrote 'hope the puppy isn't disturbing you.' We rarely hear it at all, and if we do it is never loud enough to actually disturb us.

My new baby can cry loudly but if I am in the ground floor bedroom with the door shut, DH can't hear her enough to be disturbed even in the living room.

It will sound worse to you anyway as you're 'mum'.

Even in the labour ward at night, we could hear the babies cry from the open windows of the ward below us, but it wasn't disturbing, it was just 'there'.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

You need more than an hour to yourself, you sound like you need some real support (not implying that your husband isn't supportive at all - I'm sure he completely is).

By the time my eldest was six months old, I had no life outside of being a mother at all. I'd gone from being a confident high earner working in central London on £45m sales accounts to an emotional blob who had no life of my own other than going to the supermarket once a week. Most days, no one would have noticed if I'd even got dressed.

I'm not saying that you're in the state I was, just trying to say that people do understand how difficult it can be,

Get yourself a baby sitter (are any grandparents on hand?) and go out for dinner - tonight if possible. Your baby will be fine and you sound like you could do with the break.
