but this is MSE and leftovers arent very MSE at £10 a head for the evening buffet 20 people not eating or 40 people only eating half is £200 wasted, which could be spent on other things.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

Well obviously you are right and we are all wrong.
I've not ever heard of anyone over catering when they don't know the definite numbers who are attending.
It's OK to say we are inviting 100, but not everyone of those 100 will come, so why cater for 100, let alone cater for more than the 100!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

It's not what you say, it's how you say it and the way it comes across.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Where are you looking? maybe we can help find you one.
Our venue does our eveing finger buffet for £6.95 a head. Which includes sarnies, pakoras, kebabs, sausage rolls, pork pies etc plus dips and pickles.
Where as they charge £8.95 for a bacon butty with sauce?????
When my mum got married she invited 100 evening guests, all 100 said yes we are coming even up until a few days before, the night time comes and only 70 people turned up, so she wasted food for 30 people.
It had never crossed her mind to under cater incase people were ill and couldnt make it etc etc.
When we looked at the table at the end of the night in sure there was still enough food left to cater fo another wedding and i felt so guilty about all that food just going to waste.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

That's the thing isn't it ~ if we had definite numbers, then of course we would cater for those numbers, but when you have people saying they are coming, then don't, or people dropping out at the last minute for whatever reasons, all that wasted food = wasted money.laura.1984 wrote: »im sorry you have a problem with my post
It wasn't just this post, it's a few you have made.

i dont have a problem wit you rpost as i know that sometimes things come across wrong in forum format however:laura.1984 wrote: »im sorry you have a problem with my post
a good venue will know exactly how to cater for a function, they will have pput in a lot of time getting their quantities right so that their costings are right.
They now exactly how many sarnies a person will need etc, we get 4 sarnie triangles per head but personnaly i normally only manage 2-3, depending on what else is available, whereas uncle tommy might not eat any sarnies and will have 3 portions of prok pie instead, where as i dont like pork pie so thats fine as he has had my share.
Over catering is daft in my opinion, but as you stated its what your doing and thats fine its only your money your wasting and making more money for the venue when you really dont need to. Why make then richer and yourself poorer for no reason.
Most venues will have extras and should you request it you can say, can you make up some more sarnies there going better than i expected and they will bill you for these, but you will have to check if this is the case with your venue.
Personnaly when i am invited to an evening do only i always have something to eat before going as i never know what is going to be on the menu, should it be something i dont like if i hadnt have eaten earlier i would be starving and grumpy as hell and i wouldnt want that as it would ruin the eveing. Its not the brides fault i am a fussy eater it is mine. So therefore i never eat much at an evening function anyway, probably only 25% of what has been allocated for my mouth.
So i would suggest instead of over catering offer a wider choice of foods available if thats an option.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T

My thinking is that if the 'main' 30 have scoffed a three course meal finishing at 6.30pm, they will not want to eat again only two hours after, however those coming for the evening at 7.30pm will be able to 'line the tums'. A lot of our guest will come straight from shifts at the hospital finishing between 7-8pm so will need feeding at 8.30pm!

I got the venue to bring the quoted price of £12.50pp for the buffet down to £6.25pp (cos they mucked us around and I hinted I was going to cancel)! They make a heck of a lot of profit on buffets, so they can cope with losing a bit of profit from that as they know your guests will stay and drink more from their (not very cheap, therefore profitable) bar, if those guest are well fed
