last week i was trying to work out exactly how much an item would cost if went on a 5 mile round trip to get it, so post on the travel board for some help, as i know you add the price of tyres ...insurance..petrol...etc...it worked out that my car cost me including the petrol roughly 41- 42 p per mile.....
so now if i see a bargin advertised somewhere..and its only that i would go and get i add on the cost to get there and back... and its supprising how quick the price of that item has changed....
so dont be blinded by the sale price....or go looking round loads of shops.. ..incorporate it into a journey that you were going to do anyway....and if its only one item that you need... and its a bit more expensive local... it might work out cheaper in the long run...
and to think i used to nip in the car and go 10 - 15 miles just because i knew something was a few pennies cheaper.......

That's a good point and something that is mentioned often in the tightwad gazette. It's something that needs good organisatation and planning which I'm not good at, but I do try to combine journeys and I walk where I can. (The bus used to be cheap but it's more expensive than finding a parking space now but that's a rant for another day!)May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I've always worked on the principle that it isn't a bargain if you have to pay to get it, there are a lot of things posted on the Boots and Tesco threads but if I'm not going there anyway I don't bother with them.
If I do need things I try to walk in and take my trolley, 3 hours parking costs nearly £5 here so that's £5 more I have to spend in my pocket rather than the councilsOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

hi..gingham ribbon......it was the tightwad gazzette book that i bought a month or so back ( because of thriftlady) that got me thinking about it.....
i know people and on the telly. they were saying to cut back on car journeys etc.... but its not until you actually find out the true cost of travelling in your car that the penny drops with me anyway.......
so now even if i see a voucher in a daily newspaper for something free. and its got to be claimed that day... unless i really want it...or i need something else in the area of that shop,,, i dont bother anymore.....Work to live= not live to work0 -
I used to have a fiat uno 4 years back, now family have grown ive a mondeo. The difference in petrol is crippling me but I cant downsize.Annoys me that diesels are so much more expensive but my next car certainly will have to be.
I used to enjoy just going for drives to neighbourhood towns looking for bargains thats now no longer an option!0 -
Petrol can easily become my biggest monthly expense (along with the council tax..). I have done very well in the last few years on substanially cuting spending and getting less for more, thanks to this site. I am now trying to do exactly what you do and work out the mileage costs before making a journey.
During the spring I dceided to combine my food shop journey with my twice weekly trip to the swimming pool. A lovely unexpected bonus came from that in that I acidently found the time my local Morrisons reduce everything! For the first time I have also managed to lift share due to a new job. Over the holidays I have quite oiften walked the 2 miles to my local charity shop, which is good for my health also.
I am still looking for further ideas....0 -
Just realised I don't know what the Tighwad Gazette is. Have I missed a gem?0

I'm not sure of the distance between my house and the town centre but I know it takes me 20 mins to walk there
It's good exercise too but I'm sure as hell not doing it today
