The restaurant's phone was being answered until Thursday evening. But whenever I tried on Friday it was unanswered (or the full answermachine clicked in). Maybe you have a 2nd number in which case would you share it here? I am keen to talk to Denis as i am sure others are too. thanks so much.0

I did manage to pick up a couple of other numbers but left them at work. Neither yielded anything more than a long ringing. I don't think it's going to help much having what could easily be 10,000 people trying to contact the same person who is not likely to be answering his phone. I have also informed by credit card company and they have put the amount I spent on hold pending investigation. I am confident that I will have lost no more than time wasted, a few telephone calls and a certain amount of lost face. Nevertheless, I am dying to find out more but, one way or another, it will all come out in the end.0

All adds to the intrigue. Thanks for that (although I thought for a minute that it might have been today's Wakefield Express : 'Wine mystery finally solved as..........')0

Went to the local police here in Scotland and they told us that unless we can reasonably prove that there was no intent to supply the wine then there is little which can be done. In other words, it's a civil matter between us and the supplier. Not entirely unexpected but not helpful. Thus, we thought we would speak to Leeds trading standards department on Monday.
It's not so much the £200 but more the wife continually reminding me that "I told you so"... Like Stourbridge Man above I would agree that it was an awful lot of money and trouble to fund a potential scam. The case continues...0 -
I agree. Also an expensive way to advertise a restaurant (lucky for Denis that Leeds is too far even for me to travel to claim my free dinner).0

Eric
I would go back to the Police and force the issue here. Tell them, that you are not the only one in this boat. There are lots of people all over the country. State that staff of the owner of the company have not seen him in over a week. (this was reported briefly on wp forum), also state that the freephone number is now defunct and nobody from the company are available for contact.
If they are still remiss to hand the complaint over to the West Yorkshire Police ask to make a complaint, either way they are going to have to fill out paper work. I feel this situation in teetering between civil and criminal, as each day goes on more to the latter. They have a duty to investigate which it is before making a decision.0 -
Hi Haddington-Eric......fyi I spoke to the Leeds Trading people on Friday explaining my predicament and they were very polite but could only verify that Mardenis Ltd is in order and up to date with accounts etc. I couldn't get any other information from them. Maybe I asked the wrong questions - I would be interested to hear how anyone else fares if they get in touch with them.0

well its the old story time and time again "let the buyer beware" fair enough if majestic or someone was advertising the goods but in times of recession there are always con men out there and i suppose a bargain looks good on a website but when you do not even know the company its best to avoid , it def was too good to be true the prices they had on the site and it was only launched a few weeks back, i hope all involved get the money back and the con men get the just deserves if they can catch them that is.0

Further to my previous message, I have had the transaction put into pending by Barclaycard subject to further investigation by them - after I fill in some forms regarding the circumstances.
However, I am concerned that this might involve some scam to gather credit card details including the security codes on the reverse of the cards. I do not wish to have my details circulated or sold in some way to other potential scammers, so I have asked Barclaycard to block my card and issue me with a new one, on the basis that the existing one might be compromised.
If other people are similarly concerned then it might be something to consider.0
