I rang The yorkshire evening post today to ask if the story was known locally. A journalist apparently is investigating....I still can't help wondering if it is chaos theory rather than a scam. Hmm very worrying though.

This is one of the strangest things I have ever come across. Yes, I placed a large order with these people and no, it hasn't arrived. But I thoroughly researched the company behind the offer and the prices advertised were not so ridiculous as to be impossible. Clearly, if it is a fraud then someone is going to prison for it, but why spend what must have been tens of thousands on advertising, plus the cost of hiring a load of call centre staff if you know you're not going to gain anything out of it ? Really weird !

In Belgium with Denis Lefranc ?

I'm tempted to go up to Leeds and enjoy a huge meal at 3, York Place at his expense if I don't get my money back. Is this some extraordinarily odd marketing ploy for his restaurant ?
  • I do hope you all get the wine you ordered. I ate at 3 York Place on Tuesday night so can assure anyone who's concerned that it is a real restaurant in Leeds. Has anyone tried calling the restaurant to enquire about Denis Lefranc or the wine order?

  • Yes I have tried to phone the restaurant about 100 times today.....the answer machine picks up and the message tape is full. so no joy there. It really is strange though, because why would Denis Lefrancq risk his reputation like this.....maybe a plausible answer will come out soon. wish it would.

Yes, all afternoon. Usually engaged, otherwise an answering machine directing you to their website. You can't leave a message as (shock horror !) the memory is full. I even telephoned a few local businesses to find out if it was still open but, oddly, most of them had never heard of it.

I think the company had about £170k in the bank on their last set of accounts, which is why I decided that their 'offer' might be a firm bet.

Is it any good, the restaurant ?
  • If it is crooked, would we be covered by the Safe Home Ordering Protection scheme..? I think that the company concerned would need to go into liquidation but I wondered whether anyone knew...

For the people who seem to have lost out here, why not go to his restaurant, order extensively from the menu and wine list - finest of course (said in Swiss Toni voice), and then walk out without paying. If you are challenged then ask the management to pursue you through the courts, where you will be able to tell your story.
I think you would be on a winner.

That's really weird because I phoned to make a booking at the restaurant and got through straight away... Have you checked the number against the restaurant booking number? Sorry if that's not helpful but I really had no trouble getting through (although I haven't ordered any wine from them).

  • Like many others on here, it would appear that I am also a potential victim. £415 of product ordered and delivery was promised for today between 16:00-20:00. Needless to say, no delivery and like others I cannot get through as the number is now inactive. It does seem like rather a lot of effort would have had to be undertaken if this was a scam, especially as it is so closely connected to the restaurant, as debited on my credit card, maybe I'm just an optimist.

Thank the lord I decided not to pay by debit card (phew!) and pay with BarclayCard instead. Just spoken with them and relevant paperwork is on way to me for signature and further info etc. Transaction now suspended pendning a full investigation. Hopefully this will result in me not losing out.
