I rarely look at the pictures of the models to be honest sometimes I'll see an outfit I like and then I'll check on ebay to see if I can get something similar at a fraction of the cost lol!!!
I like reading the articles (especially in Good Housekeeping) and sometimes there are some really nice recipies in there too - as for the purely fashion mags then I'd only ever buy them if they were 3 fr £1 or I got a really good gift ;) they don't go to waste as I take them down our doctors surgery and my neighbour has some too usually for the kids she teaches to use in their various collages - the pretty pictures are nice and colourful so make great flowers etc ;)

not very fair !! you've chopped off the bit where I said that it has fashion and makeup and proper articles about, for want of a better way of putting it, 'issues' !!!

I make no apologies for the fact that I like to read about frivolous things like hairstyles and fashion as well as the important things in life. As I said in my earlier posts, what annoyed me about this particular item was that this isn't one of the big glossy mags but is a magazine which claims to be aimed at 'real' women....

There have always been these mags like vogue etc. But over the last few years there have been more and more of them. Why because of the amount of credit that is chucked at you everytime you walk down the street.

How many times have you been into a high street clothes shop and have walked up to the counter (possible with a sale or 'damaged'item that you intend to fix :D) and the counter staff have said to you....
"would you like to save 10% on your purchase today by opening up one of our store cards.....?"

What a joke, save 10%? With a card that has an APR of 30%?! Correct my maths if it's wrong but is that actually classed as a saving?!!! :D

I have seen an advert for a magazine about politics and stuff...you know where the woman is at the hairdressers and is moaning because she won't make intelligent conversation, or the one with the stewardess walking down the plane saying, "Tea? Coffee? Discussion on the NHS?"
I can't remember what it's called but I may give it a go!

Come on, don't take me too seriously. I was only having a bit of a laugh. But I do pick up my wifes mags from time to time and am staggered by some of the things I read in there, and I really don't think women do themselves justice by buying this crap. Don't you think they are a bit...patronising to women in general?

It's as if they're saying: "You're a woman, therefore all your really bothered about is fashion and makeup, babies, astrology, cooking, flowers, curtains, kittens, and Brad Pitt. Oh, we'd better throw in a bit of social commentary just to make ourselves a little bit credible. "

Then just to confirm themselves as the vacuous hypocritical !!!!!!!s they are, they'll run a piece about "the devastating horrors of eating disorders", but put it right next to a piece entitled "URGH!! SEE THE PICTURES OF THE SUPERMODEL WHO HAS REALLY LET HERSELF GO BY PUTTING ON THREE POUNDS!!!ITS DISGUSTING"

Do your brains a favour. Buy the economist or New Scientist instead. They're quite interesting and don't mind us being overweight

awww, sorry, didn't mean to bite your head off !!

I still love a bit of fashion and makeup though......

oh, and my favourite article of all has to be where they interview some 4 stone minor celeb about whats in their fridge and they claim that they just can't function unless they eat a bar of dairy milk and a piece of cheesecake every day, but they're just fortunate enough to have a fast metabolism. :rotfl: Do I look that stupid?!! Actually, don't answer that! I suppose by buying the mags in the first place, I'm pretty much implying that I am...
  • About those store cards..... isn't there a trick (maybe fom Martin's book????) - you get one for the discount, buy something along with some friends - you buy everything to get the discount. Then the friends give you the money straight away, you pay off the card immediately and cancel it??

I don't think I personally would be able to be so organised, but I guess you could save a bit if there were a group of people that needed clothes (maybe for work, a wedding, etc)

I'm probably not going to win any popularity contests here, but this is just one opinion and really is not intended to offend anyone. Please take it just as that, although feel free to vent spleen if it really p***** you off!

I've read this thread from start to finish and then back again and the interesting thing here is how everyone is quick to jump on the "let's blame the media" bandwagon [and no, I don't work in media!]... It's like blaming McDonalds for rising obesity levels – if no one wanted the product, they wouldn't be in business! So I feel that it's a little harsh to buy into the product and then blame the company for all the wrong in the world.

People have to realise that although options are presented to them, they don't have to avail of them. The glossy mags are just a 21st century take on "keeping up with the Joneses" – you see and so you must have. Magazines have always been about presenting lives to aspire to hence articles about blowing ridiculous amounts of cash in a 20 minute shopping spree are reflective of/fueled by the nation's interest in the [so-called] desirable footballers' wives type lifestyles... If people weren't interested, there'd be no market for this.

You, the consumer, can either buy into that, or not, but to blame the media for presenting an option to you is ridiculous. People watch holiday programmes on TV but I haven't [yet] heard these programmes being blamed for people ending up in debt for wanting to travel to some far-flung place. The name of the game is choice and you can exercise that [and common sense] as you please.

I'm not trying to come across as moralistic, although re-reading this post, I can see it coming across that way. Apologies again to anyone I have offended – it really wasn't the intention.

Just for the record though, I have bought – and continue to buy – many of these magazines and I just ignore/skip over any articles that show me how to spend money I haven't got...

Everybody's got a choice, but unfortunately Britain as a nation is beginning to look for a scapegoat in every area of life whenever something goes wrong, hence the rise in sueing everybody from schools for depriving kids of an education by not excluding school bullies, to fast food restaurants for rising levels in childhood obesity. What next? Sueing the media for tempting you into debt by showing you aspirational lifestyles? Come on people!

    Rant over...

Creeping quietly away [to read some glossy mag!]
