Quick update on situation. I don't know if you recall but we got turned down by our lenders for a remortgage so after much humming and hawing and looking at our options, DMP or downsize house, we went to another lender to see if we would be elligible for a mortgage if we moved. She checked and advised us that if we wanted we could get the remortgage we had asked for originally as we had passed their credit check. (How do they work these things out).

So again after much mulling over we have decided:

1. to take it, it will cost us the same each month as we would have been paying to a DMP and although over a couple of years extra it will keep our credit rating ok (hopefully). We have managed not to use the credit cards since Xmas (probably for the first time in 20+ years) and are adamant that we will not be using them. We are going to have a ceremonial cutting of the cards.

and

2. if we find it is too hard going we are going to downsize.

Now I have one question. We might not be on a DMP but we are still deeply in debt and have in fact swapped unsecured debt for secured debt, I know not always a good idea, but we still have the option to downsize if we want.

So.............can I still be in your group? You all seem such lovely people and obviously of the same age and having made the same mistakes as us.

I'll keep you posted of our progress and any money saving tips would be greatly appreciated. We are going for a complete life change here, we only have 9 years until retirement and really need to get out of debt and start saving.

Of course you can, when I started the thread I really should have not put the DMP on it, because it really applies to all of us who are trying to get sorted out, whichever way we can, before we retire.

As you say, there are different views re DMP or secured debt, but whichever way suits you best, is the way you have to go, and as you say....you can always downsize.

Keep us posted....we'll all still be here. (unfortunately)..

If anyone is reading this thread for the first time, they will just turn around and go somewhere else, they will think we are suffering from some aging disease.!!! :eek: We are really sensible people, honest.......well not that sensible, we got into debt didn't we.!!

On that note, I'm off to bed, I'm up at 5.15 tomorrow.....Night, night all.
