Why I don't bother

After being made redundant last year and having decent qualifications I thought applying for jobs would give me a decent enough chance. ALL jobs I applied for, basic and skilled (according to my qualifications and experience) didn't even get me an interview or indeed a notification of failure.
I am sick of taking time to fill in application forms requiring personal information that they must keep and not getting a thing back.
I am part self employed working from home producing music and images and I will have to make this work as it's so dire and depressing out there. As I suffer depression and have low self confidence this isn't good for me which is why I now don't bother.
Rant over.

hi hubb I am sorry your feeling down, most of us here at MSE feel like this and millions of other people also, your not alone, just take one day at a time and try and not to think too far ahead. I know its easy to say but why worry about the unknown, I always find good things happen when I least expect them too.
I get depressed too but i always say to myself I have to be strong and not give up, one day someone somwehere has to employ me!!!0 -
That's a reasonable and understandable decision to make, unless you're claiming JSA.0

Iam claiming JSA but still have to have hope some where, just have to keep on trying, thats all we can do.0

I can understand your feelings, I honestly can. I have maintained for years that there should be certain prerequisites in place when an employer
advertises a vacancy.
Firstly, they should be obliged to reply to applicants whether sucessful or not. This is just basic common courtesy.
Secondly, they should be bound by law to state the salary.
This " negotiable " or " " competitive " spiel is nonsense for most jobs.
As for " meets national minimum wage " Well what exactly is that telling you? They have to pay at least that!0 -
All agency jobs should also state the actual company location not the 'commutable from' rubbish too
I'm in the same position as you Hubb. Was made redundant from a well paid job nearly two years ago and don't get interviews either. Once you have a gap employers consider you worthless for some reason.
I think self employment is a good solution so I hope you make a success of it0 -
Well, I did get JSA until it ran out in October when I just got my stamps paid. I then opted for the DWP offer of £200 a month for the first 4 months of business if you came off JSA and worked self employed. I am currently doing just that, working hard on my own music/Photography but I do need a part time income.0

BOB A H - I totally agree with what you say about prerequisites in place when an employer advertises vacancies. It is so plain damn rude not even acknowledging you CV or telling you you didnt get the job, what the hell do their HR department do exactly its pure lazyness.
Hubb I feel your pain! In the same boat I have been sending my CV out to countless organisations and I don't even get a response from them it is sooooooo fustrating I lost my job just before christmas and I hate being unemployed and the obvious financial impact on your lifestyle it has! Job market in finance (which I do) is totally dead where I am in the North east all the agencies are sitting around twiddling their thumbs - I don't think people quite realise how serious it is at the moment. We just have to keep our heads up and battle on through it. I don't want to risk sounding a bit like David Brent from the 'office' but.. "you'll never fail until you stop trying" Good Luck!:-)if i had known then what i know now0 -

Ok whats the reasons for it then Bob? What if a company gets 400 applicants, every single one should get a reply in your opinion?.....what a waste of manpower, time and ultimately costly....IMO only interviewee's deserve a compuslory reply.
I guess if you haven't heard 2-3 weeks after the closing date then you should accept you were unsuccessful.Always ask ACAS0 -

Again back when times were good and when companies were getting only a few applications acknowledging them all was easy however in the last 2 years with less and less jobs more and more people apply and it's not lazyness but why should companies pay someone to literally spend days sending out refusal letters and costing them alot of money in terms of time and wages etcAlways ask ACAS0 -

Sorry I disagree there may be fewer jobs and more applications but that is still no excuse JDTurk if we take the time to apply then the least they can do is let us know the outcome.
How hard is it to send an email to everyone unsuccesful in the job and thats a click of a button... and at the end of the day that should be done by the companies HR and I still say they are 'Lazy' it simply leaves the person applying for the job with a bad taste in their mouth about the company after there ordeal.if i had known then what i know now0
