My mum's old bath had been stained for years then after watching how clean is your house or something like that, she gave it a go. Ariel Non Bio, I think it was. It tells you to soak your washing in the bath with some washing powder and not only did it get the stains out the clothes it even got the blue/green stain under the tap out. I tried it on her white plastic sink which is about 15 years old and badly tea stained. It worked well there too, not quite perfect, but not brown anymore :-)
I haven't tried it in the toilet, but it might work there too.
I have tried biological washing powder but it didn't do anything sadly. I also have and the blue/green stains under the tap, but seem to have faded quite a bit on their own. I know the stains are probably doing no harm but look very unsightly if visitors come,0 -
If you're talking about the Polti, just type Polti steamer into Google and do a search on Kelkoo or similar comparison site.
I did a quick search and they seem to be between £150 and £250, but I'm sure you can get a potentially cheaper one on eBay, etc - but don't forget to allow for the super-sonic postage, unless you happen to live hearby the seller and can pick up?
In any event, perhaps as this thread was meant to be about how to save money, rather than spend it, you will probably get a better response if you start another message with a Title like Polti Steamer ? Good Luck anyway and hope you find what you are seeking .......0 -
I have been told that if you wash the tiles over with a solution of car wax it seals the grout and makes it more waterproof therefore resistant to the grout staining. It sounds like a really good idea but I havent tried it yet...has anyone else?0

Started reading this and was ready to pass on the vinegar tip; not necessary. Try using 'spirit' vinegar as opposed to malt so that the colour in the malt doesn't add to the problem. Another essential in the eco-friendly home (inasmuch as the less you use the better, but it's impossible to eliminate chemicals completely), you should all be heading for the shelf where the soda crystals are. These also come - more expensively - as liquid soda crystals and if you experiment you can make your own by adding a small amount of water to the crystals in a container and allowing them to dissolve. Experiment for best results because, I think this is correct, the hardness of your water effects the amount of lime-scale you deposit on the porcelain (been friendly with that too often). Once you have used vinegar to clear the build up of limescale use soda crystals/liquid to keep the tiles and bath, shower, lavatory and grout clean. In the end, though, you have to be a bit of a scrubber to keep clean.Waddle you do eh?0

Hi All,
For the last few months my daughter & I have been doing our best to stop using chemicals to clean with. We both bought books on natural cleaning materials and now mostly use white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, soda chrystals and lemon juice. The tile grout in the shower has been transformed by mixing a paste of bicarb.of soda with white vinegar & using an old toothbrush, apply & leave to dry. Then rinse off - back to white grout again. OK so our house does sometimes smell like a fish & chip shop,(not for long though!) but hey rather that than the "pine" or "ocean fresh" that is masking the real chemicals being inhaled! This is also a much cheaper way to clean too!0 -
Went to Woolworths today and picked up a steam cleaner for £29.99
called STEAM BEE by JML. powerful continuous steam to sanitise and clean.0 -
Lidl are doing steam cleaners this week, a bit more pricey though at £79-99.
2000 watts and 4 bars if that means anything to any techies out there, I only understand the 3 year guarantee that goes with it.0 -

I'll second that! Considering it's only Tescos own brand, it's so effective. I wouldn't use anything else. Probably not the best thing to do - but I actually used it around the taps when we moved into our new house because they were really covered in scale. I was careful not to leave it on too long - because it's BLUE and thought it might stain, but the results were amazing.
Don't think I'd be too keen to use tea bags though - seeing what it does to a tea cup! I'd be interested to know how that worked so well...Any scientists out there that can explain??Live as if your were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
