They're always telling people not to use the roads, I don't know who they think they're telling though because everybody has to go to work etc and you can't arbitrarily decide to stay at home just because the man on the telly said don't use the roads, or you'd be sacked.
The message needs to be more .... specific. So you know it's you that shouldn't use the roads - and which roads.
Whoever goes out just because they fancy it? Nobody in this weather. Crazy advice.0 -

I think so too PN. Last year DH broke a rib and we got snowed in...it was obvious it was stupid for him to try to go to work and he worked from home. If he worked from home last year I don't see why he can't for this year too....I really wish he could work from home more. especially when its cold at night0 -
Well we are back! Stroke of luck on the way there actually, I just about managed to do my road and then pulling onto the next road which leads out of the village and to the town, a snow plough! So I followed behind (leaving a little distance so as to avoid the 'muck being spewed) and had quite a good journey to the school.
On the way back (no going to my parents today, the risk of being stuck there is too great), you could see a snow plough had been through fairly recently but the going got tougher and tougher until it was little more than a crawl as the snow started coming down really hard.
There was talk the school will be closed tomorrow.....I will believe it when I see it.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Even if the school isn't closed, I would think twice about sending them in if the weather doesn't improve.
Son's school is open but they have some intranet system to put the work if the school is shut. I get the impression they are just itching to try this out!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Apply. They could get you and a second Sue, both very able and wanting to do part time hours each.
My DW got a job share (Primary Teacher) and I thought it was a win win situation all round.
She teamed up with another teacher with small children, who, when back to full time became the "head" of the nursery school, set up when all schools started nurseries because kids in nurseries = more year one bums on seats = more funding.
The kids got 2 x 2/3rds of a full time teacher and two teachers analysing each child's needs, for the price of one. In most jobs the services of a partnership is better than a lone individual.
The school had automatic built in cover and the head never had to worry about a supply teacher to cover absences.
My wife learned a lot from the other teacher - "If you want to learn something, teach it."
In fact the only loser was my 'phone billSo yesterday the bird station had at least 6 birds feeding. Today I look out of the window to see one squirrel sitting on the feeding tray helping himself to seeds. Grrr! Why isn't he hibernating? Birds are no wary and staying clear.
Those grey tree rats don't hibernate. Mind you we have a real rat or two, something has spent all night gnawing its way into the shed where we keep the garden furniture.
This is the worst snow I can remember since 1963 (the winter that came from Russia on Boxing day and lasted until Easter).
I spent 6 hours from 07:00 and managed to create a route up and down our track 150 yards to the public highway and a "metalled" road surface. Well it has been snowing gritty snow for over 24 hours now and I am starting to worry about the strength of some of our roofs. It has got to the height where it comes over the top of standard wellies.
Looks like I will need to do the brushing & shovelling all over again.
The main problem is that we have a track with two ruts and a green grass hump in the middle, so I have to brush the snow off the grass and try to turn it into "Ice Road Trucking" in the ruts. Otherwise snow builds up under the car until the pad of rock hard snow lifts the drive wheels off the ground. (I've only done it once this year. I had to lie on the snow with a graft (*) hacking away under the car and hoping I would not chop something important like a lighting loom or a fuel pipe:eek:) Fortunately I have a year's supply of sieved fire ash, to give a bit of traction on the ice and encourage the sun to penetrate & melt the ice. However I am now almost back to square one.
John.
PS any one recommend a really effective rat trap ? - I hate putting down poison as it gets eaten by all the little field mice etc. while the rats steer clear.
(*) Graft - think of a dinkey ladies spade. Make the blade three lengths of steel not one. Make the handle twice as thick and three times longer, finally curve the blade and coat it with PTFE (Teflon). Now you have something for digging post holes or cleaning out the bed of a ditch, or hacking at a bad of snow/ice under the car.0 -

Well I think I have bred eldest into a hardy soul....he has got himself a little babysitting role 5 evenings a week for a friends brother, only problem is that it is a good 3 to 4 miles from here. Fine in good weather, not so fine in bad weather but the boy takes after me in not liking to let people down (the mum wouldn't be able to go to her part time job otherwise) and just got his army boots on from his time in Air and Army cadets and has gone on a stomp down there.
Mind you, he got stuck down there last year in the bad snow (he had a fall on an attempt to get home and dislocated his hip - not an unusual thing for him before anyone panics and imagines ambulances and hospital stays, he just pops it back in again)....I am expecting the phone call now to say he is stuck there again this year!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. I've not really spoken about it on here but have on the disability board. Basically, the years of caring and being on the receiving end of middle sons Aspergic rages alongside already unstable joints due to extreme hypermobility has taken its toll.
So the crutch is a permanent feature now although it has been suggested this is not a good thing for my hypermobile shoulders and could be doing more longterm damage and that I should actually have an electric wheelchair (not on your blooming Nelly!) to minimise the damage and preserve the function I currently have.
I'm not disabled though......which confuzzles people. We made it! Aw Sue, I am so sorry. You are the classic example of no good deed goes unpunished. My admiration for you grows every day.
Well it did until I realised you were mad as a bliddy hatter....
Why are you trying to get your kids to school in bonkers conditions?
Can't you just shut them in a room with a board game and a couple of DVD's and tell them the first one to draw blood sleeps in the shed?
EDIT I think none of us have a clue how hard your life has beenRetail is the only therapy that works0
