I also need to spend some time organising the freezer, but its tooooooooo cooooooold for that today isn't it? I bought some plastic boxes to put in it to try and divide the vastness of the chest freezer into meat, veg, dairy. Its a huge space and just has two baskets, finding plastic boxes to fit it without wasting space is proving awkward.

Perfect time to reorganize freezer, no rush, it is colder outside the freezer than it normally is inside the freezer.

We have had out first real snow of the winter, it is 1 inch, and still snowing... boiler is fixed, just in time.

Too much snow to do anything in the garden except feed animals...

I also agree with applying... what's the worst thing that could happen? You could get the job! If you don't get the job, you are in exactly the same situation as now.

Another question for the nice people, & I'm getting desperate with this one.

It is my dads 65th. As a milestone birthday, I want to get him something nice, that he'll appreciate/use/go back to.

    Hi lj,

Is your dad interested in family history? I went on a family history course this week, the highlight of which was actually seeing for real one of those long family trees that the kings of England used to do that traced their lineage back to God (seriously...). They had one on the Matthew Pinsent edition of "Who Do You Think You Are?".

Anyhoooo... Most people tracing their family histories do so when they are retired, so you could buy him a subscription to a family tree compiling software or something like that for his new computer. Basic level Ancestry is often free in local libraries, so I wouldn't recommend buying that before checking out what's available.

When my mum was ill I made her a book outlining all of the year's my brothers and I have been alive, with a page per year of pictures of the children (ie us as kids), little flashes showing what was in the charts, popular culture etc. So in 1969 for example, I've got Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, a school pic of me from Australia, my brother stroking a kangaroo pic etc. It takes a lot of work, but if your dad is sentimental, he might like something like that. Even my dad likes it and he's not even a little bit sentimental!

On a totally different note, have you seen this book?

I saw it the other day in the library and noticed it was about growing up as part of a racial minority in Wolverhampton, so I didn't know if you'd be interested.

BTW.... You were spot on saying if there is a race on I'd be indoors watching it. I have missed very few over the past 20 years, only missing them if I've been out of the country.

    Hi Viva,

following my nan's passing (on my dads side) he became interested in family history. As his birthday is next to christmas I have this kinda problem every year. So in that year, I got him a reference book on tracing your family history, and for christmas an accompanying programme for the pc to built a family tree, adding in photo's, scans of certificates etc.

Regarding the book, looks like something I may library rather than invest in. The midlands is quite diverse culturally (though there are still areas which are hotspots for racism:().

Meera Syal is local, & unfortunately a number of people have jumped on her bandwagon, especially following the success of the film Anita & Me.

Just seen the weather and I think a nice person or two is near Reigate where they just said, essentially, not to drive unless you have to. Missed whether its just weather or an accident complicating weather but hope you are all ok whereever you are.

I've come in for a bit before letting chickens out, its too dark yet, and too cold to loiter and make jobs up. Everything is stuck to the ground, so no point sweeping.

You don't strike me as having much of a Bah humbug mode misskool. Though you are of course a board guide on the bah humbug forum. Maybe its rubbing off;).

Well, all my trains are either delayed or cancelled this morning and I can't work from home because it's unplanned.

Taking the day off but am at a bit of a loose end as really, there is nothing to do :(

What is very surprising is that there is little snow here and we aren't due any. Normally we get dumped on big time. Tomorrow I'm due to drive to the West Midlands but I have no idea of where has snow and where hasn't. If anyone has local knowledge of weather and road conditions around Warwick I'd really appreciate it as I can take a rain/snow check.

I'm out for rest of day now, so if I don't answer straight away I will still be grateful for responses. Cheers all!

Good luck at home missk, you're resourceful, you'll find something to do.

    unexpected days off ideas:

    • clear a draw/cupboard/box in the loft that has become a dumping ground.
    • any Christmas shopping you need to do alone
    • baking/batch cooking for the freezer
    • facemask/manicure at home
    • curl up indulgently and read a good book
    • clean out undersink cupboard.

DW and a couple of mates are off Christmas shopping in the Bristol/Bath area today, encouraged by the forecast of a relatively 'dry' day.:( I have told her there will be no rescue by me in our 3.5 tonne van if the worst should happen, as it's a bit tail-happy at the best of times. She says she's taking sleeping bags! :o

The forecast for here looks positively tropical by Saturday.....7C. :)
