I know Risk well
, the combat side (rolling dice) could be a little repetitive, however deciding where to attack and place units and the diplomacy side interested me.
Speaking of which, have you ever played the game by the same name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%28game%29 ? That's thoroughly enjoyable too (caveat. I haven't played since University).
One friend has given positive feedback about this one http://www.waronterrortheboardgame.com/thegame/ .
I had never even heard of diplomacy, but it looks interesting.

Another question for the nice people, & I'm getting desperate with this one.
It is my dads 65th. As a milestone birthday, I want to get him something nice, that he'll appreciate/use/go back to.
Little about him, he doesn't work anymore (heart & associated problems), is a member of a golf club, likes days out, spoiling my nephews, an occasional drink, playing with his pc (still a relative newbie to pc's), is a sports fan - but more watching nowadays. He does have an interest in some gadgets. Calls himself a music lover, but has questionable tastes.
Any suggestions, no matter how wild, appreciated. It may help trigger something...:)

A weekend away at a famous golf course?
Wine tasting?
Depending on music taste, a concert or something similar?
A meal on the Orient Express?
No idea of budget here so throwing in some expensive ones.....
Cheaper end
A decent bottle of what ever he drinks
A CD of his questionable music
An idiots guide to how to use the pc (I have no idea if he would need this)
A gift voucher for a gadget site.
Hope that helps. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I did, at the last minute manage to get him Rod Stewart tickets for his 50th. Pure luck, but the gig coincided with his birthday! I really like the ideas of A weekend away at a famous golf course & Wine tasting. I will investigate these (as if neccessary can suggest splitting it with my brother). It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Forgot to mention, I managed to resolve my next book dilemma by picking this:
I'm a Capote fan. Actually, that should read I am a big fan of In Cold Blood. I've read gerald Clarkes biography, & seen the film Capote (based on Clarkes book). The film Infamous was based on Plimptons book above.
Described as an oral history, I found it very up & down. Very slow to start with, very twitchy in the way it jumps about. I'm not sure it endeared me to read more oral biographies.
For my sins, I picked this 900+ pager  which I've started
I'll let you know what it is like some time in 2012...;)
Naughty me went christmas & birthday present shopping on sunday, & bought 2 books for myself.:o Had to stop myself buying more...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Does he have any old records? You can buy turntables that convert old records into mp3s.
They plug into the usb port and you play the record and it records it.
e.g. Maplins, £40 http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=502193
Also - I see they've remastered the Beatles Blue Album and Beatles Red Album.... that's his generation.0 -

Me & my brother got him one of those a few years ago. He couldn't work it & (& I think he exchanged it!)
He has the red & blue albums. Naughtily they've been re-released a few times.
However, PN you clearly have a mind for this type of thing, as great minds think alike (with the vinyl converter!):TIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Old people don't realise when they're cold - and that's how they die.... so, I insisted on cooking a big hot filling meal for tea. Mum'd have had a sandwich. It's lovely when you've a belly full of hot food, it really warms you from the inside.
Meanwhile, dad's been on the phone ranting at the council for not letting him know something was shut.... not sure how he thought they'd have achieved that - perhaps he thinks they should have personally phoned everybody in town to let them know.... right. Apparently he arrived, tried to get out of the car and his legs went from under him on the ice and he couldn't move any way at all - had to be helped by passers by back into his car to drive home. Old people, eh! *rolls eyes*... silly s0d shouldn't have gone out. So, he's outraged there was no big "SHUT!" sign at the car park.0 -
I have seen an absolutely perfect job for my experience.....but it has problems.
The hours almost fit into what I have available and therein lies my problem, the boys' high school has a breakfast club from 8 am but to get to where the job is, I would have to drop them somewhere at 7.30 (8am start in a town notorious for traffic probs 15 miles away), plus of course, how on earth would I do handover of youngest to his TA?
Second problem is after school, youngest could go to chat and chill (an afterschool social club) as could middle son with a bit of pushing but that is only 4 evenings a week, so the Friday, I would be left with finishing at 4, getting back here for around 4.30 but school finishing at 2.50! And again, the thorny problem of handover of youngest from his TA to me at the end of the day (she hands over to me and then he goes to the social club at the moment)
It is so tempting to just apply and work things out somehow as it is almost full time hours, term time only and not a bad salary..plus I tick all the boxes for administrative experience, qualifications etc.
Grrrr...so annoying! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD.
