Debate House Prices

How awful PN. I hope it survives. :(

Nota bene...in case you haven't seen the warning nice people, there is a malicious email purporting to be from MSE and it carries a trojan virus, delete it if you get it. I thought it was weird as we had discussed this not so long ago :( at least its not direct from the site.

I'd seen the link at the top, but took on board to ignore any emails based on the one heading. I've never read ONE of the Newsletters I get yet, ever.

Probably not a great idea to click on that link.

I have found out something disturbing. Vince Cabel is going to appear on strictly come dancing at Christmas. That is not disturbing, although his dance probably will be. What is disturbing is he is only 67. I had thought he was 150 years old, at the minimum.

Nor me. I feel slightly deprived, am I not good enough for spammers?

Same here, not good enough. :-(

Given that email addresses aren't shown on the forums (afaik - is there something hidden somewhere?), how do the spammers have a list of email addresses with forum names? There's an obvious answer to that. Would the ICO be interested in a case like this?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

If, as Martin says, the information was not sold to a third party, then it isn't really an ICO matter, it is a crime under s1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and it would be a police matter.

I've not looked, but I think you can put your email in your profile. Worth a quick poll to find out amongst us lot if we have email in our profile, if we received an email to our MSE name

    Me: No, No.

Although now I've checked, I can't see that there is a space for email visible.

    So I dug further:
UserCP, Edit Options - does have the option to allow people to download your vCard info (email address).

Yes, you can put an email in, but in the thread, the very first person who reported this problem hadn't put an email in, and a lot of other people hadn't.

One possibility is that a scrapper* could find email addresses if people had put them on the forum. Not impossible, but not probable either. Much easier just to hack the forum software.

    * a scrapper is a program that is written to extract useful information from web pages like a forum automatically; such as emails and / or information on a specific topic.

no email in profile I don't think, no email fromnaughty people either.

I'm getting ANOTHER cold. I'm gonna go to the doctor....I've had flu already this season and this is the fourth? cold, all merging into each other. I've managed to avoid using new GP so far, my old one is still calling and checking on me. I have a bit f a phobia about GPs, partly I think because there is so much wrong with me, lol. I'm not afraid of surgeons, or surgery or needles, can inject myself with out turning a hair and though I have ''shy veins'' I don't mind blood being taken and when I've had operations I am always too calmly interested for the taste of the professionals, looking at everything and sniggering or getting exited by my own disection but GPs terrify me. My last Gp has been so wonderful I now count her as a friend...and she ''gets'' the weirdness of my GP stupidity and my rationale of the phonic madness and I'm really putting off going through change again, but it has to be done. Truly sneakily I've made appointment for DH because he needs a referral to a dermatologist. So he has to suss out the new GP on my behalf:o
