I should have been on my way to Las Vegas, or already there. Not mentioned it before, but I had a chance to go to a seminar there this weekend. Thing was, I didn't find out until about 2 weeks ago, so no time to get a passport, prepare mentally, plan my route/book hotels - and (because I've never been abroad before and may never go to the states ever), plan an entire US-trip around it, lasting about 3 weeks ... which I figured would cost me about £3000... so I decided it was more sensible to not go.
But, I did flog my ticket for just over £600. I'd got the ticket about 3 years ago as part of a package deal - and it was always "open ended dates", but suddenly I found out it's "the last one ever" this Fri-Sun.
Kind of feeling "off" though..... should I have made the effort, would it have been the right thing to do, etc etc. I'm sure I made the right choice, it's just that awful "too late now" feeling you get right after you make decisions.
Been working on my new website all this week, it's going really really slowly. I can't believe how slowly it's going... and I have to write about 200 pages for it too, although that'll be over the next 18 months realistically. Still working on content/structure and what's best... and solving some theme/template teething issues.
Also, today, it suddenly occurred to me how I might "fix" an annoyance with one of my other sites, after I saw it happening on this one.... I figured the programmer had skimped and used the excerpts field instead of the variable ... and when I tested that I was right, so I need to revisit the site where the annoyance is and test my theory, although my testing it on the 2nd site proved I was right.0 -
For your first trip abroad, that might have been a bit too far. Try a short trip to Amsterdam - the Dutch almost all speak English - to sort of get your eye in.
Oh, and before I forget, visit Bruges It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town not somebody's ........... thing? (Or just see the film.)No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

One reason I don't travel, apart from the exhorbitant cost of single travelling, is that to me most of the enjoyment is about having somebody with you to nudge and go "look at that", and the rest of the enjoyment is post-visit being able to say in conversation "do you remember when we went to ....". There are also no photos of you having fun when you're on your own.
So all in all, I've always thought of travel as expensive pointlessness.0 -

:rotfl:
With all the pre-registration and finger print taking and general "why should we let you into paradise" attitude amongst American immigration control people; I don't think I would recommend flying over the pond as a first experience of foreign travel.
(One you have gained entry most of the people are open & charming - as are most foreigners if you can get on their wavelength and allow for their environment.)0 -

What did you want to get out of the seminar Pastures? Networking contacts? Interesting presentations? The travel itself?
You may be able to get a list of contacts if you were registered, sometimes they send those out afterwards. If you wanted to see the presentations, it may be that they are also posted online, or someone you know has a copy. Then there's the travel itself, if you want to, you can always go to Vegas in the future, though it is quite a wierd place.
Nothing is as good as going, obviously, but is there anything you can get out of not going that still satisfies some of your needs? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Viva, help! I need some encouragement to decide on my next book.
A small part of me is leaning towards Atonement by Ian McEwan. I haven't read a novel for a while.

I'm not a novel person, but I've heard fantastic reviews of Atonement from my co-workers. One of them also said that it was quite different from the other McEwan that they'd read, but I don't remember what that was.
My own head is still buried in "How to Teach Quantum Physics to Your Dog". It is as easy to read as a book about QP can be, but I can still only cope with a few pages at a time before my head feels like exploding.
Go for it. I read mostly non-fiction, but you have to lose yourself in a good novel every once in a while and whilst I haven't read this one, everything I've heard has suggested you won't be disappointed. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
