Hi, I need some help, please.

My son is starting uni in a week's time, and he needs an Apple Mac (cos he's doing photography and all those arty types need Macs). I'm horrified that a £500 laptop becomes £1,000 when an Apple label is stuck on it. Anyway, where does he pick one up a bit more cheaply? He needs a Macbook Pro by the look of things, so that's over £1k even after a 10% student discount.

There's a free (or discounted ipod) with macbooks at the moment if you're a student and the student discount.

That's about it really. He can try to get a second hand one or one from the refurb store if really tight.

I'm not going to start a PC v Mac on here but if you price up the same spec on a PC laptop with the software, it's not that much more expensive. And you pay a premium for the brand name (as you do with all products).

This is an extension of this thread:

which, at 123 pages and counting, has been deemed too unwieldy.

lol, shouldn't you be nearly on your 4th thread by now?

I'm not sure what the difference would be for a photography student, but DD2, who is Fine Art, has worked on a Mac at college and then continued with the saved Photoshop image at home on my PC.

I don't want to get into the Mac/PC debate either, but she informed me cheerfully tonight that she still intends to swap between the two when she goes to uni. :)

I've spent/wasted the WHOLE day, trying to think up something to theoretically sell online... it's not for real. It's a stupid assignment. Now, the thing is, the assignment is actually doing the whole business plan and all the hardware/payment gateways etc costings and spec and putting together the business plan and a whole powerpoint presentation to present to potential investors.

All of that would be a doddle.... if only I could just dream up !!!!!! to sell online. I have absolutely ZERO interest in EVER selling anything online to anybody. Zero. So to magically dream up something out of thin air is leaving me completely cold.

Oh ... and I have to think it up tonight as I still have to write all of that lot - and another assignment on website usability ... and buy some printer ink and hope my printer works and print it out and bind it ... and faff about with stuff .... and hand it in Monday morning.

    :(

I hate anything that doesn't give me a choice... "just pick anything" doesn't work for me. I need specific choices!

I could pick anything: flog socks, downloads, books, services ... anything! But ... I can't pick. I'm rubbish at picking things.

Does it help if I pick for you? Do the first thing you thought of, which is socks.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

    Except that was a joke.

Thing is, this business plan malarky involves sections on why it'd be a great business, market segmentation etc ... and if I pick something I can't believe in, then I won't have the drive to do a good job of it.

I really want something that's actually a good idea ... and something I can actually believe in myself. Else it all just seems 100% pointless and will drag.

Sell craft items/niche hobby items/lifestyle choice items like magic gardening gloves with prepared compost tubs that people will buy for just for cachet.

I've got blight :( and 5 kilos of green tomatoes. Crossing my fingers for the rest still outside. It's like tomato graveyard at the moment.
