    Ah understand the edited version...

  • Morning All,

Well, its Sunday, (I'm quick like that) and day 9 without alcohol. I am not a recovering alcoholic, but sometimes I like to abstain for a while, de-tox, and on the plus side I always lose a bit of weight too, not that I need to but it keeps me slim.

So my de-tox,walking for 45 mins or so every day and lots of water is making me feel pretty good, though we have a huge family do in a couple of weeks so the alcohol ban will be lifted again!

    But now....the Sunday papers...

I see Alonso is looking better so far this weekend viva.

Well, if you wanted proof as to why I don't like him as much as Massa, then you've just seen it. Doesn't do as well as his team-mate on first lap, throws his toys out of the pram and then gets his own way. Not the mark of a champion in my book.

You can't beat watching motorsports live. Its loud, its smelly, its totally unenvironmentally friendly and you can feel it through your whole body. The atmosphere is unlike anything else.

    I am such a Petrolhead.

That speedway is great the smell of the burning methanol and the spectators covered in grit, smashing icon7.gif I went to Silverstone once, burned to a frazzle, no cover

That's the problem with Silverstone. If you aren't under cover you either:

    a) burn to a crisp
    b) go pink from windburn
    c) get drenched.

There are no other scenarios there. Now that they have 17 years of funding I hope that they'll stick some more roofs on.

One of the most fun motorsports events I've been to over the past few years has been the Race of Champions. If they hold it in the UK again it is well worth attending.

I've been kept busy the last 6 weeks with admin stuff on my empire. Having lost two domains (one host went under, other one was taken over), I've had to get those domains onto new hosts pronto. Then I had a bit of an oopsie moment when I sent my first newsletter out ... and the host didn't cap it by default, so it was bringing my site down every 2 minutes (I spent 3 days in the server admin section solidly keeping the server limping along until it stopped being hit). Then, I decided I don't have my usernames/logins organised, so have been religiously going through everything I belong to (about half way done now), so far up to 450 logins... all nicely backed up and recorded on a USB. Then, along the way, I discovered new/better ways of doing things, so needed to change some stuff on my main website (this means visiting every page individually, recording the entire layout/grid/contents in Excel, then making the additions), so about half way through doing that now.

The end result of all this should be a more manageable empire, streamlined.

New host is faster, hopefully I'll get newsletters sorted out within the month ... and I am managing to cull stuff that's of no interest to my site visitors through the stats in the ad server.

But, it is endless. Completely and utterly endless.

Then, randomly on Friday morning, I realised something else on my site'd not been working since I sent the newsletters out, so had to cough up some $$$ for somebody who knows what they're doing to fix it. $85/hour, but I figure that's a bargain and it had to be done.

Overall, in the past 4-6 weeks, I've "lost" and "paid out unexpectedly" about £1000 to keep my empire working. It's not all free money from nowhere ... but the free money from nowhere DOES cover it all.

I did survive Google Chrome though - Google goes round about 3x a year and changes the way it ranks/rates sites - and overnight your site could stop being number one... or you could miraculously become number one. Well, Google still thinks my site's probably passable :) So I didn't take a traffic hit there.

As you are mentioning rates in dollars; does this mean that your empire is hosted in USA, or does it simply mean the $$$'s are the currency of the interweb?

Site's hosted in the UK, I specifically paid extra for it to be hosted in the UK... but the "men who fix things" are in the US. US labour is cheaper than UK labour. In IT, say, all the Brits I know doing tech support etc are on about £15-18k, all the Americans I know are on $15-18k.
