I have a whole new batch of wildlife in my garden here...and I saw Mr/Mrs Hedgehog the other night. The only reason for keeping the bottom of the garden overgrown.:o
Yeah, we've got a resident hedgehog again. S/he pops out for a snuffle about as it's getting dark and I'm outside watering. I cluck at him/her a bit (I know I know, s/he's not a pet dog) and each time I do so s/he appears to do a little jump.0 -
Yeah, we've got a resident hedgehog
Hmmm....we've got a mole. For a while, we thought he was off across the field, but now he's returned with a vengeance, surfacing in the most inconvenient places.
Luckily, our garden isn't the sort with pristine lawns and neat beds, but having just made a decent path, it's maddening to find Moley erupting in the middle of it. If he would just turn about, he could go nearly 1/4 of a mile without upsetting anyone.
Ah, but that way lies the gamekeeper man. Perhaps he knows.0 -

2 Sparrowhawks are living in our gardens now. They like to grab a bluetits off my neighbours feeder.

A pair of sparrowhawks!
Male sparrowhawks are smaller than the females, and tend to take smaller prey, but a female is capable of taking a collared dove or even a woodpigeon.
My DW provides a sparrow hawk feeding station outside our kitchen window. One morning there was a swirl of wings and it was curtains for a blue tit on the peanut feeder. Unfortunately it was one of those "ball" types, where the little birds can get inside the ball to feed but the large birds cannot hoover up all the food.
Well male bird brain had got the tit with both talons BUT had a bar of the wire ball between his legs. It was a bit like the trick for catching monkeys by putting a tit bit inside a narrow necked bottle.
Much flapping of wings as bird brain worked out that he had to let go with at least one set of talons.
Moles are not much of a problem on "three horse clay" but one intrepid visitor made it into the garden from the field in the wet autumn (probably trying to avoid drowning - the winter water level sees off young badgers too), I got an off cut of corrugated iron and bent it into a curve. Then hammered it into the turf just in front of Brock. Over the period of about a week, by squashing his tunnel behind him with a rammer, I managed to turn him through 180 degrees and off he went across the field again.
THe worst mole damage I've ever seen was at Stowe - I suppose its new National Trust owners have to be careful of some visitors going all "Wind in the Willows" over the groundsmen if it is suggested that the little men in waistecoats are being trapped/gassed.0 -
I'm missing LIR's input a lot I have to say.....but looks like we have got Bouche in her place. Welcome.
Magpies...I have some tales about sarf east lundun ones that I will try to recall later. I am back and only 1 lurking around but 2 Sparrowhawks are living in our gardens now. They like to grab a bluetits off my neighbours feeder.

What happened to LIR? I'm afraid I went AWOL for a bit while RL was v busy, and now I come back I find she's disappeared.
PS I notice that cashtrated hasn't seen much traffic recently. For anyone who was following my house buying support thread there, though, here's a brief note to say I've updated it.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
I miss brodericks and fungusfighters input too, it's difficult to mimick their level of innuendo. What happened to LIR? I'm afraid I went AWOL for a bit while RL was v busy, and now I come back I find she's disappeared.

She posted to say that when she moved there would be no electricity or internet. She's joined the 1930s before the rest of us.

I've been too busy for many things lately, trying to tidy up the empire... today's task was to find a new theme, which takes hours because I am too tight (and fearful of choosing a wrong 'un) to buy a theme maker. So, I downloaded a theme, which then needs hours and hours of tweaks. So I started that, but for a break decided to filter in some rss feeds and start fiddling with the length of the feeds too ... then I dropped in some ad server code in the footer area, looked, looked, it wasn't showing up, so I figured that at 4am I couldn't be bothered to work out why ... and came here instead
Today was a 19 hour day, I just get in the zone and that's it.. weeks go by.
It's endless mind-numbing boring stuff lately... but once it's all done (is it ever?) I might find time to leave the house. Although I do have an e-commerce assignment to put together, well, two of them really. Dull stuff it was, I did a short dull course for some points towards my degree; the course I wanted to go on was on/off/on/off ... then this other one came up so I did that instead, wish I'd not bothered, it's all sooooo basic.0 -

LJ was talking of going to Longleat. Perhaps he's still there; it does take a while to do it all.......
I hope he heeded my advice about not driving through the monkey enclosure.....
I think RL's been a bit busy for quite a few of us. I've lurked, but haven't posted much, due to sheer tiredness. Then I get up at stupid times like this.....
(Actually, the cats woke me, tearing around after a mouse which has been in the house for days now.At one time I would have bothered about this, but I'm so used to them bringing stuff in now, they can just get on with it!)
