The Steam Trivet is in Ikea for about £1 (pink winged's picyure). Tesco do a value electric one for about £10 I think0

My vote is still for electric, you fill it & switch on, it buzzes when it ready.
Frees up your hob.
Doesn't boil dry.
Doesn't boil over.0 -
We have a microwave rice and vegetable steamer, which we got from Lakeland.
It's a plastic pot with a lid, and inside fits the steamer basket. Doesn't take up hob space and is easy to clean.
It took us a bit of trial and error to get the timings right on veggies but it's great.0 -
Hello :hello:
I swear by my steamer and I steam all my vegetables (I only use fresh veg) and would never boil veg again. Initially I didn't want it but ex-OH talked me into it and I'm glad he did now!!.
I have a tefal steamer (electric) its great I stick all my veggies in, I tend to put the pots in the bottom tier and other veggies in the other tiers put the water in and depending on how much veg I'm cooking turn on for 30-40 mins and leave them. You can do fish, chicken & rice in this steamer as well but I haven't tried them so can't comment.
I spent about £25.00 on the steamer and I 've had it nearly 4 years now and would recommend it to anyone. I brought it out of Argos and think it's abit cheaper now.

Hi All
My husband wants me to buy a steamer for our veg (he has been reading loads on vitamins being lost due to over cooking)
I dont want another gadget have actually had a steamer before and never really used, i think i may have seen on the stove ones or attachements to pans?
If anyone has any recommendations pls let me know0 -
Hi *niptuckfan*,
I always steam veg as I think it's so much better than boiling for retaining the vitamins. I use this little gadget which I bought in a local kitchen shop. It fits inside your normal saucepans....just add a little water to cover the bottom of the pan.
There's an older thread on steamers which should help so I'll merge your thread with it.

I had a Tefal and gave it to the charity shop. Have now got the saucepan type - a tenner from Morrisons and use it every day!0

Have had an electric steamer for years...tried it a few times and didn't like it...I found that carrots took an hour and couldn't get on with rice at all...I now have a rice cooker which even an idiot couldn't get wrong...came from Japan but they can be got in oriental supermarkets usually, no idea of price. I also have an Argos three tier top of stove steamer and I would not part with it for the world...potatoes and veg cooked in it to-day and some very old frozen veggies that OH found when defrosting the outside freezer are now simmering in liquid to make to-morrows soup.

Please may I resurrect this thread to ask a question about the 3 tier tefal electric steamer. Just looking at these online ahead of christmas day meal preparation but it's difficult to know what sort of size they are. Would you say that with all the tiers removed, this would be big enough to fit my christmas pud for steaming? The pudding basin is 20cm wide, 11cm deep. It's also flippin' heavy. Would it be able to cope? It would be great to be able to avoid one of my gas rings being tied up for 2 hours what with all the other stuff needing to be prepared.
Also as I have 2 LOs I can see it getting plenty of use in the future, so hopefully not just a steamer for christmas but a steamer for life0
