Advice Needed on Taylor Wimpey

  • I bought a TW house in December and overall I am very happy with it. A close friend also bought a TW house on another site in September 2012 and is happy also. Her house is on a new TW site and mine is on one bought from a builder that went bust. So her house is a typical TW style but mine is a bit different. Both happy customers so far. Both houses have some snags but nothing major and most are due to some pretty shoddy sub-contractors for things like tiling. Easily fixable. I never thought moving into a new build would mean absolute perfection but the standard of the build is excellent and the finish is overall good (apart from my tiling!). My father is a site manager for commercial projects and he feels that my house is well built. I'm sure other TW sites have less happy customers but is this perhaps down to different site managers and their standards? My site manager seems very proud of his site.

What has gone wrong with your house (to the poster who posted with big red text)?

And for the record I have no connection to TW other than having recently bought a house from them.
  • It is very interesting reading the different experiences with Taylor Wimpey.

We just today actually, have reserved a plot on a new section of development in Basingstoke. So far, the experience with the sales team has been nothing but pleasant - there has been no hard sell, and as first time buyers, let us purchase the property with a discount of £15K which also saves us £5K off the stamp duty as well.

Whilst the optional extras can come at a premium, there's nothing to say that you can't add those at a later date yourself at a better price (we're already planning to have the installed kitchen re-done) - but the basic spec provides suitable and adequate space and appliances to let us move in and be ready to go from day one.

The site manager for the development we are on has also won numerous awards and has apparently undertaken extra bits of work free of charge for those who have purchased from plan.

We intend to have the house snagged by our own sought surveyor to get a second opinion on the taylor wimpey snagging/de-snagging but from the looks of several properties we looked at on the site, the overall quality seems to be good, and we spoke to some of the people already on site and seemed to be generally quite happy and suffered only minor snagging issues. My OH's brother bought a taylor wimpey home in Lancashire and have said they have had no problems at all with their place - so i'm hopeful things will be smooth for us. The development we're moving on two is still going to be there for the next two years, so even if there are any problems when we move in, I can just walk straight down to the main office and kick off.

Those who are simply just slagging off Taylor Wimpey, it would be great if you could actually give specific examples about where you have had issues - it may help those who are brave enough to attempt to buy their first home with them, to know what to look for to ensure moving is as smooth as possible.
  • if its a semi or terrace you are purchasing ask for the keys for the neighbouring house you should be able to have a conversation between the party wall

I just moved to a semidetached newbuild house from TW with a 2 year old kid. We asked the neighbor if they were hearing her crying but they absolutely hear nothing, its sound proof. I think it's just a myth people think about new builds.

I am converting my old office, and the amount of soundproofing that's going into the structure .....

It's all required for building regs. I doubt that anybody aims to exceed the requirements by very much, but a lot of it depends on the individual tradesmen on the day, as a small mistake can let sound travel. So, if it's done right, it will be fine.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • they must have improved :D
  • Well they have reported excellent results today so from that I am assuming they are doing well and people are certainly having the confidence with them.
  • I can only hear my neighbours if they are putting something up on the wall involving a hammer and nails! I've not heard them apart from this and they have not heard us either. :j

It took 4 years for wimpeys to visit me at home to discuss the problems,3 managers came and they lied to me,luckily i taped the conversation and i have now received letters of apology from them for the lies.Still the problems exist so enough of the apologies Wimpey, actions speak louder than words.

Hi there, I wanted to ask how you were getting on with your new property and if you have suffered any problems with TX? Like you, I have recently purchased a TW property in Basingstoke and we are having no end of trouble having a leaking ceiling fixed. it has now been 7 weeks since we first reported the problem and no resolution has been completed. We have kept on reporting this to the site manager and customer services but they don't seem to be in an any hurry to resolve this. The only thing they've done is skim over the damp areas of the plasterboard ceiling. I'm no builder, but surely plastering over the problem isn't the way to resolve a damp ceiling??
