  • Or sod all that and join the AA/RAC/Greenflag instead..! ;)

Well i had the misfortune of having AA breakdown cover and what a waste of money that was.

went out to car in morning and TWO flat tyres, AA wouldnt help as this must have been malicious so wasnt covered.

got one of the tyres changed at kwik fit and put spare on, next day clipped kerb avoiding dizzy bint taking corner too fast and blew tyre. AA wouldnt come out as no servicable spare..:(

so just remember breakdown cover is no good if you no servicable spare on a car which has space for a spare.

lots of people could get caught out by this!!

I think a spacesaver or a can is a great idea and a real improvement

I had a car for 11 years, the only time the spare came out of the boot was to replace a worn out one so I had 2 new tyres on the front rather than one old and one new. It then meant the spare going back in the boot was a worn out one not fit for anything more than driving to the nearest tyre fitter to be changed
for those 140K miles I was lugging that extra weight around for nothing

mind you in case you think I'm too progressive, it really appals me that there are people who don't know how / will not change a tyre. Blimey when I was 14 I remember helping my Mum change the tyre on our school run (and I do mean help not just watch), my dad taught us both how to when Mum first started driving. The only time we got the AA out was when the car broke (it did that a lot seeing as it was one of British Leyland's finest products)

I keep hearing things like this. Seems getting out of doing the job you pay them for is a secondary occupation for breakdown companies these days.

Pretty shocking performance by the AA there - definitely strike them from the list when looking for breakdown recovery!

the clue is in the term BREAKDOWN COVER if you hit a kerb and kill the tyre then that is an accident not a beakdown. the policy does state that you must have a servicable spare at all times.
i often got called to mini's and bms that had a tin of gunk and no spare, dont fret you are covered they will take you to the nearest tyre place (stock permmiting) or home if no stock or late at night (cover permmiting) never came across a breakdown org that refused service for space savers or gunk

it wasnt the fact it was classed as an accident that was the problem, they were more than happy to come out until i advised i had no spare,

that was why they wouldnt come out, and that is the point i am making, many people could be caught out by this fact if buying a car with no spare.

though i would have had a spare had they helped the previous day when there was no accident?

i imagine the person at the AA you spoke to was a numpty
technically having 2 flat tyres is classed as a breakdown so should have been covered imo.
sometimes with the AA and rac they use what they term call out prevention which means finding an excuse for not turning out:)

and hence very easily stolen ;)

Except, you had to undo the "cage" from inside the car. Certainly enough to dissuade any oppertunist, and a right sod to get a set of bolt croppers under there.

I used to reguarly swap wheels around on my old fester and got fed up of the hassle of having to wind the cage down every month or so (and in the end it got a "lip" on the mounting surface which made it a right pain in the posterior, so I just slung the spare in the boot and chucked the cage away :D

I think its more of a pain in the rear though having to pull all of my rubbish out of the boot to get at the spare in my current set of wheels
Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male:

Yes, join the AA, they'll cover it, (but won't pay for a tyre fitter)

I've just re-read the t&c's, I didn't realise the AA no longer recover you after an accident, wonder when they changed this?
