Your logic seems to be askew here, when for 50 odd years spare wheels have been free but now suddenly it`s an extra for no other reason than penny-pinching profit.
You get a puncture, you jack the car up and put the spare on.
No one forces anyone to buy a particular car. The manufacturer can't promise a spare and then not deliver one.Happy chappy0 -

So it seems after 4 pages we have learnt:
If you want a spare wheel, buy a car that comes with a spare wheel.
If you are buying a new car for £xk read the brochure.
If you cant change your own wheel, learn, and keep gloves and a cheap paper overall in the boot.

To be fair, it is - tyres on modern cars are quite wide and will eat boot space. Imagine trying to fit a full size 18" 235 tyre in the back of a car! You'd lose a lot of boot depth - while i'd like it then WhatCar etc would pan the lack of rear load space.

Poor design then, my car has a huge boot and a full size spare.

I'm wondering if there will come a time when the breakdown companies will charge a premium for gunk only equipped cars as they make more and more call outs for recovery of shredded tyres.
At least with a spacesaver you can continue the journey albeit at 50mph.
Renault have a new spacesaver which bridges the gap between the spacesaver and a full tyre and allows you to drive at up to 80mph.The man without a signature.0 -
it only allows you to drive to 70 (with that being the highest speed limit and all in the uk)...0

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a "space saver" and an ordinary spare wheel?
Spacesavers are usually half width, a much higher recommended pressure, say 60 psi and a speed limit often 50 mph. Although as pointed out elswhere in this thread, spacesavers with higher speed limits exist, I would never go to those limits.0
