Whilst I'm here can I ask a bit of advice too? We're trying to bf but he's really struggling with the latch and becomes so frustrated and angry and screams blue murder, til he then gives up and goes to sleep. I've been expressing and cup feeding but it's just not enough for him so I've given him some formula tonight (formula mixed with enough tears from me to fill a river!), is it beneficial to still carry on expressing and mixing? MW in the hospital told me this was stupid and I was just as well totally formula feeding if I was 'giving up' :(

Hi Gymfiend, hopefully you'll see this reply amongst the others when you get back online.

My boy Andrew was very premature, and struggled with maintaining a latch for more than a few seconds. He was in SCBU and despite loads of advice from the BF Counsellor, who assured me that we were both doing it right, we never did establish proper BF. When he was discharged, it was on the basis of express-and-bottle feeding, a routine I've maintained for 4 months post-discharge. I applaud you if you've got the patience to cupfeed, I didn't!

Don't give up trying to BF if it's important to you. I tried for a few weeks and then gave up as I found it too distressing. Another regular poster managed to get her baby to establish BF after 8 weeks. Keep trying, and investigate using latch assists & nipple shields.

There is also nothing wrong with either expressing long-term (although it's one heck of a commitment), and nothing wrong with switching to formula if that is what is best for you and your baby. You have to think holistically (the whole picture) - getting stressed about feeling a BF failure is not good, and you're not a failure if you decide that FF is a less stressful option.

Krystal and Elle-Gee are trained as feeding advisors, so if you've got specific questions, then they will probably be able to help.

Well HV came today, she was really lovely and not at all patronising like I expected. She's an ex midwife so makes me feel she knows a lil more about what she talking about. She asked how I was doing and mentioned that am really teary atm, she asked if I have suffered depression in the past and then we had a chat about personal stuff. She is putting me forward for the free baby massage classes as she thinks this may help, dont know how but as its something I was intrested in anyways its a bonus :D She is really pleased with Tahlie and comented on her ability to support her head so well already. She has lost 2oz but said she wasnt concerned as it could be just down to bowel/bladder movements, she took other measurements and tried to do the hearing test but with no joy as she was wide awake and although not crying wasnt being quiet enough. She gave me lots of leaflets and the Birth to Five book all really usefull stuff and info about appointments etc.Asked her about using dummy already to settle her on an evening and also using nipple sheilds, again really supportive and said if it keeps me BFing then to give it a try :D

Well OH is just heating thru roast that MIL made us, so will have that and continue to catch up and then maybe post again time allowing!
almost all of them are :) you have to be either a MW or nurse related to children to train as a HV

I've finally listed my phone on ebay - yey me only took 4 months:p

Gym - I forgot to say earlier, i was mixed feeding Lily as i felt she wasn't getting enough breastmilk. And she was fine!
I read that as they are still getting breastmilk they are still getting the benefits.

We're FF fully now, but i still feel she benefited from what i did BF her.

Which brings me onto this question for everyone.. :)
I still have the 10ozs of EBM in my freezer, i dont know what to do with it though since we're FF now. Should i give it to her or just chuck it?

I want to be a HV, is why im doing the MW course :D

EA it takes a few weeks for all you bits n bobs to get back into place, you have that empty tummy until it's all back.
Aww and I thought I only thought I was skinnier after having Seth cos I'd been so big before!!

Just a flaw in todays "theories"...
Single parents shouldnt be allowed to claim benefits, as its their own fault if the parent that doesnt live with them doesnt pay them any money - how are they supposed to eat and keep a roof over their heads, if its also a terrible thing to work before that child is 16? Ho hum... that is all!

I thought that white dress was gorgeous, and not old fashioned at all! Its a very similar style to some of the things in stock in New Look at the moment ;)

we are leaving the safari park until the summer as we usually stay at the wigwams or camp for a few days! its better in the summer as you can sit about in the sun whilst the kids play and relax!(haha who am i kidding Charlie is mobile this year!)
Xscape is now on my list so need to sit with the calander etc and work out dates, i also need to add the MSE meet in too as i forgot about that!
What's for you won't go past you
