Am I right in thinking that it's OK to go back to brie/stilton/pate even if you are Breast feeding? My cravings for all of the above have just started t thew extent that I have had to ask DH not to bring it into the house!!...thank goodness I only have 4 weeks left to go!!

Yes - all the forbidden cheeses and pates are fine when you're breastfeeding! :D I also read somewhere (in amongst all the baby bumf) that blue cheese is actually ok during pregnancy providing it has been cooked. I kept forgetting last time round and had a few pasta dishes with blue cheese sauces when eating out.

The only things to be wary of when breastfeeding are foods like strong curry etc as they can give baby wind - from both ends! ;) And obviously you would need to keep an eye on alcohol intake.:o

congrats to all the newly added and fingers crossed that Becles is quiet for a reason ;)

The guidelines about what to eat are all about risk aversion if you do end up with listeria whilst pregnant then not only are you likely to be more ill but baby will be too. If you're cooking things for yourself and you know it's well cooked then things like shellfish and cheeses are fine. Liver is to be avoided so pate isn't a great idea and bought pates are theoretically a listeria risk but if you tell your midwife you're craving pate she'll more than likely say eat some - it's all about balance.

As for alcohol, I've been craving a drink for most of my pregnancy. During the first trimester when I stole a sip it tasted horrid though so I didn't want to drink any more. The current NHS guidelines are no more than 1-2 units per week but current research suggests that all TTC and pregnant women should avoid all alcohol throughout the time they are TTC and pregnant as there is no definitive answer as to what amount of alcohol is safe for baby. There is currently a suggestion that in SOME cases even very moderate alcohol consumption can cause foetal alcohol syndrome. The research isn't clear though as it's hard to get a control group etc. The advice coming through though is that the message to pregnant and TTC women should be clearer and that it should be that no alcohol should be consumed rather than the current 1-2 units... As with all these things though you should use your own judgement and judge for yourself what risks you're willing to take.

I've taken to drinking cold fizzy drinks (Appletize esp) as a substitute for lager and it seems to be distracting me at least so I'm not missing the alcohol :rotfl:

It's a coincidence you're all discussing foods etc because I came online worrying because I had a smear of pate last week. I didn't realise there was pate in the food I was eating until I had started and it was just SO yummy I couldn't stop myself finishing the rest ... :o

I've been fretting disproportionately (my pre-pregnant, rational self would roll her eyes and tut and say something like "a few grams of the stuff on a single occasion is hardly going to result in vitaminosis A now, is it?"), but I feel reassured and more like my usual sensible self after reading through the posts, and thanks to Justie for being a voice of reason!

Here's hoping Becles is doing fine whatever she's up to - my guess is it's either The Big Day or her poor hubby's been roped into some really serious DIY induction techniques :p

I am craving deep fried brie with a little side salad and loads of yellow pepper
it WILL be the first thing i eat after this baby and me come home! :D

have you heard the latest crap, apparently we are now not supposed to eat cooked meats.... like ham out of a packet, you know .. wafer thin sandwich ham, because of the listeria risk.... puh-LEASE!
eating a ham sandwich has NEVER made me ill, pregnant or otherwise

the next person who tells me im not allowed to eat something without a damn good reason is going to get a smack in the chops

    ..... mmmmnnn chops.....

theoretically this is allowed these days as long as its piping hot and thoroughly cooked through. Personally, i'd rather not take the risk and look forward to my brie and pate baguette which I hve today asked my DH to ensure accompanies us to the hospital ;) :rotfl:

AAH! and here in lies the problem...they made this one up when I was 8.5 months pregnant!! (i.e:NOW!) What about all the sandwich meat I have eaten up until now?! Bloody irresponsible saying all these things without FULL proof if you ask me. Our parents and 10 generations before us didn't have these issues. And I wonder what effect all this caution has on natural selection?

let me know where and when and i'll join you..

quite right too! mmmmmmm, mybe thats what i'll have for dinner. Lamb...Is that allowed still? ;)

I am inundated with ideas of what to actually put IN my hospital bag (which I suddenly realised I probably ought to pack with only 3 1/2 weeks to go ) but what did you/your SO use?!

I have a small suitcase on wheels (cabin baggage size) and I have a couple of changing bags which I just can't imagine being big enough for my stuff AND baby's. Should I invest in something specifically because to be honest thats the last thing we can afford to spend money on at the moment but at the same time, I don't want to arrive and have everyone wonder how long we are planning on staying!

    Thanks Ladies/Gents

    Hi Morty

I had a large holdall which probably would have compared in size with your suitcase. I followed the advice on this thread re what to pack in your hospital bag and my enormous bag was full to the brim. Nobody at the hospital took any notice, so I'd definitely advise to use the suitcase and certainly not buy something new - what would Martin say?!

Quick update. My son finally arrived 11 days late on 4th May. We're both doing great and had a really good labour/delivery (40mins total from active stage) with no pain relief or intervention and thats after 2 major back surgeries and spd so for anyone suffering there is hope. Didnt watch the panorama programme but the midwifes here were absoloutly fantastic. Could not have asked for anything better, I wish the BBC would show both sides but I guess that would lower the ratings. Anyway good luck to those still waiting to deliver.
