    Hi Jen,

Sorry to hear about your bleeding, it's awful isn't it. I have been the same. I started bleeding first at about 6 weeks and it has been almost weekly since then. Last week was worst and it was quite heavy, enough to soak my underwear. Had to wait four days for a scan but all was well. I started bleeding again yesterday......this time I have just been told to monitor it (whatever that means? monitor it and then what?). I think they are getting sick of me at the epu having had 6 scans already. I am dithering what to do now too - wait till my dating scan on friday or call mw monday....?

How are you now? Has it slowed down any? I think if I were you I would be tempted to call the hospital and ask to be put through to the early preg unit. If it's too early to do scan, which it might be (though they scanned me early anyway in case I had my dates wrong), at least they will take a look at you and maybe take bloods to check hormones.

Only other advice I was given was rest, put your feet up and make sure you drink anough water. Let us know how you go, fingers crossed everything goes well for you.

    And Congratulations to Dormouse!

Really sorry to hear that Jen. But agree with Becles, better to get it checked out so you hopefully can know either way. How about ringing your doctors out of hours service to ask them what you should do? Amazing how these things always happen on weekends isn't it. I remember I had a bit of bleeding with DD1 around 12 weeks and it was a Sunday, followed by a bank holiday Monday and then I was due to fly off on the Tuesday on holiday. I spoke to my out of hours doctor but he told me to wait and see what happened, that I should go on holiday, take it easy and if the worst happened then he told me that the medical facilities in the country I was visiting were very good - hardly helped to put my mind at rest though. It did stop though after a few days, these things do happen, so try not to stress too much. Far easier said than done though, I know.

nhs direct are "exceptionally busy right now and only want to deal with urgent cases" I dont think im an urgent case?

Ill try again in a little while. unless not knowing drives me too mad then ill have to phone the hospital and ask about the EPU, does every hospital have one of these?

Surely people who need seen that urgently will be calling ambulances, not NHS Direct?!

It's not like you're phoning with a sore throat or a sprained ankle, so I would persevere. You're worried and stressed and deserve to be given some advice and reassurance if nothing else.

I hope this all settles down for you and turns out to be a false alarm.

To fac73, I can totally sympathise. I found the first trimester absolutely crap, looking back, and I didn't even have morning sickness! I just felt miserable, about everything.

Now that people know I'm pregnant they're forever lecturing me. My job is quite physical and active but I want to carry on as normal, which is my choice. But all anyone wants to do is have me lying in a dark room resting, it seems - that and regaling me with stories of their third degree tears and postnatal depression. Enough to give me antenatal depression! Learning to ignore this rubbish is the best thing you can do - as someone else suggested, sing yourself a happy song while nodding and smiling! :D

ring them again, that will be just be a filter.
i had a presentation from nhs direct who told us they get calls of "how long to boil an egg"
"whats the telephone number of my doctor"
etc etc i would say those are the types of non emergencies they wish to avoid.

so try again and if you get no reply ring you local hospital, ask to be put through to the Early pregnancy unit and they will give you some advice.
ps if your hospital doesnt have one ask for the gynae/ womens health/early foetal assessment unit

Sorry to hear that you are having such a rough time. I hope that it all calms down and you can get some rest this weekend.

As you are only five weeks and are not booked in with the hospital yet, you may be better off calling your emergency doctor? Reason being that they can bypass A&E for you (well they did for me) and would be able to get you into the gynae ward for an U/S if need be?

I had quite frightening heavy bleeding with my third pregnancy and tbh just called BUPA and booked and paid for a scan that day (cost me £80). I was 10 weeks though so they were able to do a "tummy" scan rather than trans vaginal (which you may not want anyway if you are bleeding anyway).

When I called the doctor, I was essentially told that all they would do is an internal examination to feel whether the cervix is open. If it is, then there is very little that can be done. Personally I didn't want anyone poking about anyway having had a previous m/c.

All was well anyway. The consultant couldn't say why the bleeding was there and to this day I still don't know why it happened.

Try and lay down and take it easy (not the simplest thing with little ones running about I know).
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."
  • Just wanted to pop in, it seams quite a few of you are having quite a tough time at the mo and wanted to send you all a big hug. Keep your chin up:grouphug:

    Hi Jen

I hope you got some help from the NHS direct, if no joy I would suggest speaking to your GP or out of hours GP as I was told this was my first point of contact before 12 weeks, and if necessary they can refer you to the EPU ( or thats how it works here anyway).

As you have heard already many women have bleeding in pregnancy and many go onto be ok but its always best to get it checked out.

I sincerely hope that you dont get to this point but regarding HCG levels depending how far along it can take quite a while for these to return to normal, unfortunately I had a miscarriage this week at 8 weeks (following 2 normal pregnancies) and my levels are still in the 4000 range so may be quite some while before its back to normal again.

Anyway, Im sure you will be ok, but dont hesitate to get it checked out.

    All the best

    Jo

Has anyone suffered from painful leg cramps?

I'm 26 weeks with SPD, but over the last couple of weeks, I've been getting awful cramps in my calf muscles. I had one on Friday morning that hurt so much, I was almost crying with pain which isn't like me, as I've a high pain threshold. Ever since I've had dull achy pains in my legs.

The left leg went into a painful cramp again last night. I managed to work the cramp out, but the muscle hurt so much I couldn't put any weight on it. I had a warm bath which eased it a bit and went to bed.

This morning both legs are achy again, and it's really annoying!
Here I go again on my own....
