That's brilliant news emma_b, I'm delighted for you. Now you can get some R&R, hopefully! I hope things settle down for you Gingham, hopefully he'll stick around some more but he's so close now there's every chance he'll be fine.

Congratulation Agutka! A faint line is as good as a dark line - tests are very reliable and the hormone that produces the line is not present in your urine unless you are pregnant so you can have confidence in even very pale lines. Definitely go ski-ing - I'm almost 14 weeks (flies by, I keep losing count!) and I'm doing nothing differently apart from avoiding lambing sheep and cat poo ... at this stage your womb is still tucked into your pelvis so is very well protected. If you want to be sure, you could call your GP for some reassurance. But it's not an illness (despite the fact that if my body had its way I would be sleeping 23 hours a day right now!).

Oh, and I did 12 tests before I believed it (like a true MSE 10 of these were bought on eBay for 1p!), but then I wasn't expecting any of this ... Good luck!

Thank you all. We did tell the family and the news got different receptions from everyone - 'that's nice' from MIL, 'so excited' from SIL, 'I knew it!' from dad (I saw him yesterday and I was not well), my mother nearly ran to John Lewis to buy nursery furniture :D, and of course the very optimistic - 'you might miscarry, very common'

I remember vaguely from biology that some embryos will not be viable, but these just don't implant. How likely is it that there is something wrong later on? Everyone in this thread comes along quite late into the pregnancy (after 1st trimester I guess), so are mostly safe, apart from the few that were so unlucky. I'm getting paranoid :o

I came here back when I first found out, you're not alone. I think about it like this - everyone talks about how high the risks of miscarriage are in the early stages, but they're actually pretty low. The vast majority of people who see a blue line will have a baby at the end of it.

I can't remember all the stats but I know that if you get to 12 weeks past your period then your risk of miscarriage is much less than 1%. I think at 6 weeks it's about 3% or something but I'm not exactly sure. The main thing to remember is that it's only a minority that are unlucky enough to have a miscarriage - although it often surprises people how common miscarriages are, it doesn't mean that as an individual you are likely to experience one.

Edited because I've just realised (duh!) you're asking about problems with the baby rather than miscarriage specifically ... I'm less familiar with these stats but the same principles apply - you're likely to be one of the huge majority of people for whom everything is straightforward.

You're definitely pregnant by the way ... the worrying has started already! :p
  • Unless there's a family history of something particular or you have specific health issues, there's probably not a high risk of any particular problems but the midwife goes through your medical history and family nedical history at the "booking" appointement (usually at 8-10 weeks). If there's even the slightest potential of any small problem they would monitor it. Hence I get extra scans to check the baby's growing enough (I'm underweight) and I also have a glucose tolerance test for diabetes (family history of diabetes) because diabetes can result in big babies. They told me it's unlikely there would be any problems but they check just in case.

Flicking through some books at the shops I read that 30% of pregnancies do not reach the 10 week stage  . No wonder I'm not excited. I saw a baby in Boots today, crying his lungs out he was, and I felt nothing.
How do you girls do it?!

Do you know what, how about I go away and only come back when I'm 3 months pregnant. This is not good for morale. Sorry.

30% seems very high to me - the stats I've read are 1 in 5 which is 20% - and even then the figures are hard to apply as some women will have a lot of miscarriages (and still have healthy children as well) and a lot of miscarriages are first time pregnancies after which all will be well. It's impossible to apply the general stats to yourself. But the worrying period is the first trimester. Try not to worry about it too much and work with your body - if you're tired then do less, if you're sick or nauseous then listen to your body - some say it's a good sign as the hormones are strong but then only about 50% of women get morning sickness so it doesn't mean anything if you don't...

That's enough of that talk you! This is exactly what this forum is for - and the reason I'm still hanging around! (Imogen is a month old today) You feel free to share your thoughts, worries, stresses and panics. We all have them and this is a great way to help you though it. I know everyone else on here will tell you the same. :grouphug:

I found out when I was 5 and a half weeks and worried right up until 12 weeks. Try to get plenty of rest, enjoy sharing your news and stay realistic. And enjoy your holiday, it might be the last skiing trip you take for a while!

Oh and forgot to say about naming bumps - we called ours India as we'd been on hols in Goa when we conceived (Goa wouldn't have been great eh?!) We also referred to the baby as 'she' right up until the last couple of weeks when we decided we'd better get used to the idea of baby perhaps being a boy - we didn't know. I too didn't like the idea of referring to our child as 'it' - the same way as you refer to an inanimate object, but everyone's different. We can't explain why we said 'she' - although I was convinced I was having a girl. Turns out we were right!
