    Evening Diary,

Feeling a bit sad tonight. As you might remember weve had the dog to the vets over the past few months with this 'cough' thing he seems to do. Over Christmas he seemed to be getting worse again so we knew we would need to take him back. I came home from work and took him straight with me to pick the kids up from school. He didn't seem his normal self and was really slow, he could hardly get back up the hill home. Anyway I thought he probably just hasnt eaten much which he has also started doing recently. Checked his bowl when I got in and no he hadn't even touched his food from the morning. Went upstairs and he had been sick all over the bathroom (thank god he does it in there or else we would have no carpets left) and it was laced with spots of blood. I absolutely panicked and rang DH at work and we made the decision to take him to the vets tonight. He was so unwell after his walk I honestly thought he would not be coming back home with us after the vets. He's perked up a bit and is going back in for tests in the morning but still has hardly touched his food. Vet isn't sure what the problem is and doesnt think the 2 are linked but will find out more tomorrow. He's having a biopsy on a lump in his chest (which could just be fatty tissue), a camera down, blood tests and an X-ray.
Im feel so upset by it all. Generally he is well in himself and quite often gets mistaken for a younger dog, so he isn't doing too badly for an 11 year old labrador. DD2 was absolutely beside herself, she really loves him so much. Im dreading tomorrow but we need to know whats going on. DH is going to take him on the way to work. Vet reckons anywhere between £450-£600 , he's insured but we have to pay upfront and claim back. Luckily we have £900 in our savings from DH's bonus last year. Just printing off a claim form now and then they can sign and stamp it tomorrow whilst he's there.

Today was supposed to be a NSD but ended up paying £25 consultation fee in the vets.

    Food wise:
    Breakfast: beans on toast
Lunch: crustless quiche with salad, nakd bar (do not like the strawberry one!)
Tea: Chicken and peppers in fahita sauce, brown rice and spinach
Snacks: Fruit, yoghurt and oats and a satsuma

I think I only ate about half my tea as I just couldn't face it after everything. Ive also made myself a salad for tomorrow. Its times like these when I fall off the wagon as I'm too stressed and end up eating anything so I'm quite proud of myself really.

Im also pleased to report I've lost 2lb in the past week.

Hope everyones is ok and I'm sorry for the sad post. Will update tomorrow xx

  • Aw, poor dog :( Hope he recovers, but if he doesn't, remember that you have done everything you can for him. He's a good age and has received a lot of love from you and your family. It's always sad to say goodbye — we had to have my dad's GSD put down in April and although she was 12 and a half, so we'd been expecting it for a few years, but I still miss her like mad. I was devastated when our previous GSD died, when I was a kid (he was literally my only friend for long periods of my childhood) but I wouldn't have gone without him for the world. Your dd will learn to deal with his death and eventually will be able to think about how lucky she was to have known him, despite the grief.

The financial side is a blow, but it's part of the responsibility of having pets and part of showing your love for him. You don't have a choice, so don't beat yourself up about the cost — at least you can reclaim it and that's what EFs are for. Hope everything goes well.

    Afternoon Diary,

Chrysalis, Aspiringbutanxious, stressedmumm and DF0D thanks so much for your messages they mean a lot.

So vets rung at 11am to say bloods had all come back fine and they would go ahead with the other investigations and told us to ring after 4pm. Vets just called again around 3.30 to say he's coming round nicely from the anaesthetic but didn't say anything else but for us to go there for an appointment at 6.10pm. I really don't know what this means so trying to keep an open mind. The girls don't want to come with us so they will go to MIL's.

Just on hold to the insurance. Ive been waiting for a call back twice and it just keeps going to my voicemail!

    Will catch up soon xx

  • Hopefully it's a good sign that they are bringing him round and for you to go in a few hours?

Just a really quick one as I've got 2% left on my laptop and my chargers downstairs. He's got chronic bronchitis which was diagnosed with the X-ray so he didn't have some of the stuff done. He's a bit unsteady on his feet but I think he's pleased to be home.

Medication for life now which the insurance will cover for a year. Im soooo relieved as things could be so different tonight.

Thanks again for all your messages, il post again tomorrow when I'm not as shattered! xx
