Thanks both. Jo - hadn't thought of age concern, he is only 64 would they help him? Biggest problem is he thinks he can do EVERYTHING - 'says' he will drive his car and go shopping on his own etc....he thinks he has enough money and pulls about £1.18 out of his pocket. (Oh and I have his car key so he can't drive!)

No plans for birthday yet - think OH is taking half day but got school etc so not much to do. Elly we did Oblivion for my father in laws 50th......scary!

Em, while you are here and if its not too off topic. how much space do you need for ducks and how easy/ hard is it. Love your pics of them. really want animals and I am allergic to ones we could have inside. Chickens are obvious and have been on my mind for a while and bees are some way into the future. But I might just have fallen in love with your ducks!!

You don't need too much space, we've not got a huge garden but they have the run of the whole garden at the moment. You do need to have some source of water - we've got a temporary pond as we've only had the ducks since September (they were my 30th birthday pressie) but OH will be building a permanent one over the next couple of months. We're re-designing our garden anyway, which is a good job as the lawn we once had is no more! - because it's been raining non-stop, it's become rather muddy, they've loved it! We're planning on sectioning it up so that they have their own area.

They're not difficult to care for at all - they need fresh water and food (mixed corn, leftover veg) daily and fresh bedding once a week. The garden needs a regular hose down but that'll be easier once it's re-designed too. They get on well with the dog - he's a little afraid of them still which is good so they don't bother each other. They put themselves to bed at night as soon as it goes dimpsy - OH made them a house on stilts and they waddle up their ramp to bed. We have to shut them in and open the door in the morning. Then we leave them during the day - the garden had to be secured so they can't escape. I was worried about foxes but because they're locked away at night and i think because we have the scent of the dog, they've not been a problem (touch wood). We get fresh eggs each day from the female. We bought them as a pair for £32. They're absolutely adorable - i wouldn't swap them for the world, they make me laugh so much with their funny antics. I love hearing them in the morning when they first come out of their house, all excitable.

Sorry you didn't ask for an essay! You can tell i love them!

Nixi age concern will help anyone 50 or over. their websites has loads of fact sheets and info leaflets.
Even if your dad doesn't want help at the moment they may be able to help you deal with your side of things.

Em, I did want an essay!!! Thanks. Need to think about this. So tempted. but not sure we have enough room or how we would do the water bit and let our children have free range of the garden. maybe thats me being over wary. What breed are yours??

:) They're white indian runners - they don't need deep water, doesn't need to be any more than a foot deep so it'd depend on the age of your children i guess. Maybe give the ducks free range and coop up the children :) just kidding! x
