Have done thanks from a nice old lady that used to live upstairs when I was a student and forgot to turn off her bath... for 6 hours... police finally had to go in to get her.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

My brother's downstairs neighbour claimed direct from my brother's insurer when their washing machine leaked down into their flat too.
Also, when our cleaner at work left the taps on and the plug in the sink all weekend (she has since been sectioned) the company downstairs claimed direct from the cleaning company's insurance, bypassing their own insurer and ours in the process. They got paid out quickly too which was just as well as neighbourly relations were a bit strained for a little while.0 -
We have buildings and contents insurance with the Halifax. It is a very good policy and , like the one we used to have with M&S, does indeed have unlimited cover on both buildings and contents.0

In reply to Ben500 post, I would just like to point out that both Buildings and Contents cover include an element of either Property Owners/Owner Occupier/Public/Employers Liability and possibly some other types of Liability.
The purpose of Liability is to protect yourself against a claim from a TP for damage to property or injury to a Third Party.
In this case it is a damage to property. They have every right to go to the Neighbours Insurers to intimate a claim for the damage, however as stated it is generally easier for their own Insurers to sort out immediate help and then deal with the question of negligence. This is generally hard to prove in these cases as the neighbour's negligence would have to be proved in order for a recovery to be made.
Just thought I would stick my oar in !!

this story sounds too familiar to me.....i had a flood back in march and the work is still ongoing. i will try and offer some advice, as my insurance company ( abbey ) have been really bad.
take a note of your meter readings so you can gage how much electricity is being used by the blowers and dehumidifyers. i had these in my house for 5 weeks and they sent me a checque for £351 to cover the costs. Sounds a lot, but it only just covered the costs. I had 4 dehumidifyers and 3 blowers going non stop for 16 hrs a day. the ins.company should reimburse you. if they won't, complain.
don't let the ins. company fob you off. if you are not happy with what they say, tell them you want to make a complaint and ask them what you need to do. I have had this too many times now and finally I have got what i want.
if after complaing you don't hear anything or they fail to do anything, phone them and tell them you have spoken to the financial ombudsman ( https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk ). they are a governing body for ins. companies. you will see how far they jump once you mention these ( they get fined a large amount of money just for you making a complaint to them ). If you still don't get any answers, then phone the ombusdman and ask for advice.
make a note of all the work that is done in your house by the insurance company, who you spoke to, when you spoke to them and what has happened. it will help.
don't let the company who is responsible for redecoration get away with a bad job. i have made the company who is doing mine come and re-do work 3/4 times because of shoddy workmanship. take photos of bad workmanship ( they put me a new worktop on which was 4mm short! )
as far as the matching of items is concerned, my ins. comapny said they would only pay 100% for the items which were damaged and 50% of any matching items. like hell. i told them what i wanted and i got it. remember, the fault was not yours, thats why you pay your insurance. like the other members say, your neighbour is likely to have liability ins, therough their company, get YOUR ins. company to liaise with them and pay for the items. this is what they are there for. don't let them get away with asking you to do it.0 -

You can but I dont see why you would want to. They are not competitive generally.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
compettive with who?
i think they are - maybe i'm biased as i have a policy
i mean B&C are unlimited, good claims handling service, no charge to pay direct debit, good discounts - eg for buying online, security and no claims discount0 -
Yes you can. And we got cover at a very good rate. For a 5 bed house and contents we pay £297 per annum with full accidental cover, cover on stuff away from home, legal protection etc, etc. It was just over half what M&S wanted for the renewal.
What Halifax will want on renewal in January remains to be seen!0
