I love florida, I did quite a bit of snorkling but don't know much about the diving out there. I mainly tend to play with Mickey mouse TBH.

I've also thought about florida - is it good for diving?
I would avoid Florida like the plague. It's like Little Britain on tour!!!

I recommend Cozumel in Mexico for diving, or east-coast Australia (diving at the Great Barrier Reef is simply amazing!! - taking a helicopter trip above it is even better.)

I was in Dahab last year, its a fantastic place. Was a real shame about the bombings there.

The Sinai region does attract a lot of Isrealis, because it is one of the only places in the middle east they don't have problems getting into.

Re diving. Have you considered Malta or Greece as an alternative?

I have considered Malta but I've been told it is very 'English' and a bit of an OAP resort, I've been to about 4 or 5 greek islands so would like something different, but mexico and florida are good alternatives!

What about goa? My friend wants to go there but I've read the diving visibility isn't too good.

Malta is lots of fun, but I was there about 15 years ago, so it may have changed now. However I do remember a vibrant night life.

Re Goa, have not heard about it as a dive destination.

If its for diving, how long do you want to go for, what is your budget?

2 weeks. And budget for the holiday and spending money etc. is £700 so I guess holiday budget is £400. Could do with all inclusive, so that we could still do diving.

I know that's probably a lot to ask so may have to get a late deal?

Hate to say it, but there are often some really good late deals out to Egypt for diving. The popular dive areas are Sharm, Mar-as-alam (sp?), Hurgahda and Dahab, all in the Sinai region.

Other areas to consider: Mombasa (Kenya), Pemba (Zambia), live aboard in Somalia, Oman (around Muscat), Mauritius, the Maldives.

Some of these destinations may sound expensive (and they can be), but you may be able to get a late deal.

Hi. I'm thinking of going to Egypt (Sharm el sheikh probably) later in the year, possibly Oct / Nov.
Going with 2 friends hopefully, but VERY concerned about the risks of being bombed!

In addition to looking at the UK FCO website as suggested above, I often look at government websites in other countries to see their risk assessment of the UK as a holiday resort. It helps put things into perspective for me.

For example the Canadian consular Affairs dept says this about the UK:

    http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/report-en.asp?country=307000

For example, on terrorism in the UK it notes:

Travellers can expect increased police presence and security at major airports and throughout transportation networks in Western Europe and elsewhere. Canadians should exercise caution and maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times and in all places.
    ____________________________________________________

British authorities have warned of an increased threat of a terrorist incident in the United Kingdom. Security incidents in Europe demonstrate that attacks can occur without warning and against civilian targets. Security measures remain at a heightened level on public transport, at government installations, airports, seaports, tourist sites, and other public areas.

And even our climate is deemed risky apparently:

    5. NATURAL DISASTERS AND CLIMATE

England, Scotland, and Wales are subject to wind storms that can cause death and injury and severely damage commercial, residential, and natural areas. Heavy flooding, fog, rain, and snow can have widespread impacts, including transportation disruptions.

I guess you have to get things in perspective and just make a personal decision about these things....

  • I went to both Taba and Cario in Egypt in July for my honeymoon and it was perfectly safe, you do have a lot of checkpoints and searches but even though it make you feel a bit uneasy it's still make you feel safer as you know they that they are looking out for you.
As you drive though Cario you can see all the gun turrets with guards keeping watch.
I really enjoyed the place and would go back again.
