Didn't call as we have been told by housing association the only option we have is to turn off boiler and wait for part to come in - which was supposed to be in Friday but still have had no call back, despite chasing it Friday afternoon. Apparently the part can only be obtained from manufacturers and comes from overseas.

So the gsr left a faulty boiler on ? and you have now been told by someone on the phone at ha to turn it off and wait - and they did not tell you to call the emergency service which is what you are supposed to do if you smell gas?

She has not got a gas leak-she has a possible leak in the flue. Therefore if the boiler is off, there is no risk whatsoever.
The gas emergency service is for leaks in gas pipes-a flue is not a gas pipe.

the gas emergency service is for when you smell gas regardless of where it is - they will come out and make safe and normally letting agents, housing associations will call or advise tenants to call so we come out and ensure safe as it takes time for a gsr to call and we will be there a lot quicker, to op also mentions possible co and a loose pipe - where ever the smell is you should not smell gas and I am concerned for safety on this issue also the boiler is in the loft a confined space.

I work for the gas emergency service and would definately of raised a job for an emergency engineer to attend on this,

The contractor left boiler on and told us to keep an eye on the pipe in attic.

The housing association have then told us it has to be turned off when we called to chase the repair.

The boiler is not in the loft, it is in a cupboard on landing, but pipe/flue we have the problem with is.

Has anybody got any advice on what to do now? As we are being fobbed off re part - all I can see it being is a flue extension surely? Which I have found online for our boiler - Potterton Powermax, combi boiler. Yet they are telling us they are still waiting for the part from manufacturers. Surely this should not be taking 3 weeks to arrive, and are we entitled to any sort of compensation for lack of hot water?

The person I spoke to at HA was very aggressive about lack of water and heating as I had declined contractors offer of fan heaters!! I tried explaining that we have electric heaters and I would rather use my own, and that the hot water is the problem but she wouldn't have it.

Check your tennancy agreement. I do agree you should call the emergency services, and if they advise to turn it off then that's what you must do. In my HA tennancy agreement there is a provision for compensation fro repairs not done within an alloted time. Tell them you want to make a claim for your incomplete repair and see how fast this gets them moving.

Problem is, they have sent out a letter advising it will be done by 16th April! So I don't think I can claim unless it goes past that date. Which really is beyond a joke coz I don't see that we can be expected to be without hot water for 2 months.

Double check your tennancy agreement, mines is something like no hot water for X amount of days then £X compensation and so on. It's a stipulation from the govt I think.

Well have checked tenancy agreement and it states that this would be an emergency repair for elderly or vulnerable, or urgent for all other. Which is within 24 hours or 1 week. Not sure if we count as vulnerable, I have a 5 year old and I'm 6 months pg?

Also have letter stating will be done by today, yet the part is still not in. Have queried compensation and they don't know will get back to me!!! This is all just completely inadequate, but nobody will put me through to my housing officer as it's a repair.
