It's a potterton, not sure of the model though - am at work so don't have access to everything.

The boiler is upstairs in a hallway cupboard. The pipe goes up into the attic and out the side of the roof. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I only know what my partner has been told by the workman really.

the guy who carried out the check said it could be releasing carbon monoxide...

Is this the same guy as carried out the Landlord's Gas Safety Certificate?

If so, I would report him to the gas safe register as he obviously doesn't know what he is doing.

Either there is a risk of carbon monoxide escaping into the attic (unlikely from what you have said so far) in which case he should not have issued a fully approved safety certificate.

Or there is no risk, in which case he obviously doesn't know what he's doing.

Why not give the gas safe register a call now on 0800 408 5500, explain the situation and ask their advice on how best to proceed?

Yep same guy, but I don't think the certificate was issued as normally we get a copy of it when he leaves and didn't this time.

Yes, the bit that comes out of the roof is metal of some sort, but that bit is white plastic.

Mermaid..this is a joke. Several presumably competent people have knowledge of your appliance and yet there seems to be some question as to whether or not it is safe to use!

I would advise anyone..do not rely on a CO detector so save you if something goes wrong!

The best protection is expertly installed and maintained appliances.

I would once again suggest that you ring 0800111999 and report that you may have a safety issue. At least you will get something done about it whereas at the moment, you are floundering is no mans land!
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    1. You said you can smell gas - call 0800111999
    2. the gsr said may be leaking co in which case it should be isolated and an appropiate qualified engineer look at it -
    3. unburnt fumes are a potential risk to you so call 0800111999 who will make you safe before the ha get the correctly qualified engineer to sort it out properly.

Turn your gas off at the meter, turn all gas appliances off until checked by the engineer, do not turn any electrical appliances on or off and call - you will be asked to evacuate as the boiler is in the attic - please ensure you tell the person on the emergency line where the boiler is as it is very important as the attic is classed as confined space which cannot be ventilated easily, and an emergency engineer will attend within the hour.

I work for the gas emergency service and there is no question in my mind that you have a gas emergency at the property and that an emergency engineer should attend to make you safe.

sorry to be blunt but this could cost you your life.

Ooooh no, wouldn't want to be without hot water!

I don't understand the reluctance to report this the first time you were advised to. If you smell gas you ring 0800 111 999 - EVERYBODY should know that. Gas can kill, Carbon Monoxide can kill. Gas you can smell, CO you can't, but you really shouldn't be taking any risks!

Defo what is 1 - 2 hrs with out gas while you wait for engineer to come and make you safe as opposed to risking you and yours
