There's always alot of rubbish sprouted about uninhabitable houses, when I was younger I would have happily lived in a house with no heating to get free rent, thrown in some free labour as well to help the LL.
In fact that is virtually what I did tbh :D

I'm still not sure what the set up is here though, are they supposed to pay rent, or not? It needs to be clarified.

Um... I just liked the thread.... My apologies I thought I was liking tandraig's comment... doh! So sorry to the OP I am not enjoying your circumstances at all... such a noob I am!!! Speaking of which can anyone explain the medals system to me what's it about and such?

You get stars / medals for the number of posts. Three stars 750, 4 2000 and 5 10000. Can t remember the 1 and 2.

elyk - its nice to press the Thanks button if you agree with or like someones post! it all adds to the brownie points! the stars and medals correlate to the number of posts and the number of thanks a person makes and gets! if you particularly like a thread ie that is the Original Post then press the Like button (and the Thanks for the OP).

Have you considered asking your dad if you and your boyfriend can live together with him so you can save up for bond on a flat?

Lots of us grew up in unheated houses but legally things have changed, landlords now have to provide heating and have to have appliances safety checked.

What triggered the letter from the council? Did the previous tenants complain under the HSSRS rules? (The council can prevent them letting it because it's unsafe and has numerous other problems.) Did the LL assume that because the tenants had moved out the council would no longer follow up whether they had the work done?

He hasn't because he says they have been good enough to let us stay and he doesn't want to cause more arguments. I get why he isn't stepping in, he doesn't want to have to choose sides between his parents and me. I try not to let on how unhappy I am with the situation to him because he is just going to end up caught in the middle of it all. To top it off he refuses to move until we have paid them enough rent to cover what they have put into the property. So far we're stuck for a year after the renovations have finished. Not sure when this will be as apparently they can't afford to do much else to the place. In the mean time we have been living in the bed room without heating.

He sounds like a mummy's boy to me. Looks like you are on your own here: caught between the devil and deep blue sea. I'd walk tbh. I've been in a similar situation and when my then bf refused to grow some balls after I told him to do, I concluded that they were more important to him than me.

Yes I'm being hard but this is my experience. Sorry.
