Washable/Reusable Nappies

Lol! I remember getting completely confused looking at all the different varieties & brands available! I was lucky enough to be a nappy tester for the Mother & Baby magazine awards so I got a ton of different nappies to try from a load of different brands & got to keep them all :-)
I personally found the cotton prefolds a waste of time - awkward to get on without leaks and not very absorbant compared to towelling ones.
Why don't you try traditional terrys squares? I found them to be a much better fit than the shaped cloth nappies (especially when they are 'in between' sizes) so you could use them on both boys. They're dirt cheap compared to other kinds and you can use the waterproof wraps from the shaped nappies.
I guess they might be a bit fiddly to get on with slightly older children, but nappy nippas make it a bit easier than using pins. You can always keep the shaped ones you've got for going out & use the squares at home.0 -
I liked the terry squares when they got bigger, with motherease wraps.
for boys, you just need to fold the top of the square down about a third, then bring the ends in so they fold over each other so you have a rectangle shape with a fatter bit that goes at the front. A motherease rikki wrap will hold that without the need for pins or nappinippas and as long as the wrap still fits, the nappy always will.
Edit - I found a diagram of the fold for you! http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=148May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I used little lambs nappies, I think I paid about £120.00 so not cheap but the kit had everything I needed, I think it was 20 cotton nappies and 10 waterproof wraps and a load of booster liners and fleece liners, a roll of paper liners and a nappy bucket with lid, I didn't have any problems with little lambs I would use them again and had enough to wash them every other day as the waterproof wraps can be wiped clean and used for 3-4 nappy changes0

Thanks guys
My fault, I figured prefolds and terry squares were the same thing
I have lots of terry squares, not prefolds
Some I got with a cheapie Mothercare kit that are not absorbent  and a few "little ewe" which are fab!
I use a different type of fold though Gingham, its this and seems to work ok.
So do you guys not think much of the fitted nappies? Are they a lot of fuss over nothing?
Thanks very much for the replies

I used One Life nappies http://www.onelifeworld.com/prd.pl with fleece liners. Loved them. They are similar to Motherease.
I wouldn't use somethng bambino mio prefolds as they leak IMO.0 -
The kite fold is great when they're little. If they're big kids though, you'll have trouble getting it to fit round them when they're a bit older.
I loved kushies ultra, but because my kids were big, they grew out of the toddler size far too quickly. They were easy to use, easy to clean and very absorbant though. And they rarely leaked.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I was wondering if there were any recommendations regarding washable nappies. I have been on the nappy lady website and am awaiting the advice, but there are sooo many choices.
I am due in August but as it's our first, I'm trying to get my head round everything. I haven't thrown out the option of disposable but would like to give washables a go.
I await your suggestions and recommendations. Thank you0 -
Hi-
I might not be best qualified to answer this as I only gave birth a week ago, but here goes...
We love bumgenius flip nappies more than any of the others- they are so easy to use, you can use disposable inserts if you need to for any reason, they are less washing than other pocket-type nappies and they are birth to potty so you only need one set.
We have been using them on Alex since he was born, and love them
The others we like are sized fuzzi-bunz, but they are bulkier in the changing bag, they are more washing and more expensive as you need to buy each size.:jMummy to 2 small 4 year old bundles of mischief!:j0 -
I have looked at the flip ones, did you manage to find a starter pack for them, I can only see individual ones, but for other nappies you can buy trial and starter packs. Thanks for the reply0

I used the totsbots nappies.
They were a bit of a pain to get dry without a dryer.. but dried fairly quickly on the line or the radiators.
they were slightly bulkier than most ranges BUT mine were heavy wetters.
We never had leaks.. I used the nippa ones not the aplix (velcro) ones as velcro gathers fluff etc from clothing.
I used them popo wraps which fitted snuggly without gaps.
I never bought first size ones.. just got size 2 and folded down the flap at the front.
My advice would be to buy a second hand one of anything you think looks suitable.. and have a look.. and once baby gets here have a play and see what works best for you.
I found all-in-ones took an age to dry so are unsuitable if you cannot afford loads.
The ones that don't need a separate wrap were next to useless IME and would leak at every given opportunity.. which was almost every feed.
Buy wraps a size bigger than the nappies for best fit and coverage.. sml nappies + medium wrap.
Carrier bags make fabulous portable cheap nappy bags.. I'd tie up a dirty nappy in a carrier and pop it in a toiletries bag. never had any trouble there either.
disposable liners if not soiled just wet I would wash and reuse.. and I used fleece liners too.. poo peels off and they wash wonderfully and don't block the toilet! I did use the disposable liners with fleece ones to prevent staining and for extra dryness.
I've had 6 of my children in cloth nappies and this one will be too.. I love them!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
