  • Hi Michelle,

I saw her discussing her book 9 Steps to Financial Freedom (Practical and spiritual steps so you can stop worrying) on Oprah! Yeah, yeah... I know, but there's a lot of sense and wisdom in what she says. I bought the book on Amazon for £0.01p + P+P. There was a lot I just let wash over me, but the result of what I read freed me from lots of 'traps' I had been caught up in.

It's relevant to know that I never used to be in debt. It all happened over a 3-4 year period (2004-7) when I couldn't work for health reasons, was repeatedly told by my previous GP, there was nothing wrong with me. So all the time I was thinking, well I can get this now, or pay this bill on a credit card, cause if I pull myself together I'll be back in work in 6 weeks and pay it off, again and again and again. I even took out a consolidation load for all my debts, paid 3 payments collapased, 'No nothing wrong with you' a bit of asthma. Six months later admitted emergency hospital admission with a too many pulmonary embolisms to count for 2 months, missed 2 payments = right in up the creak.
There's a lot about personal financial management I used to reflect my 'worth' or 'value'. It's how it's marketed to us, and I fell for it. (How sad is that!) Being ill and in debt, made me feel worthless. Not being listened to by my creditors and not being listened to by my then GP, felt like the same thing and made me feel so under valued, it was difficult for me to ask for help or use help, because I didn't feel as if I deserved any. It all became very toxic. I can't really explain. But her book helped me sort my head out so I could seek and use help, (but it wasn't easy.) That's when I found MSE.

Mmm, think you may have to read the book at work though, if your partner doesn't know, but she addresses that.

  • Hi guys,
Sorry for the delay. I've just found the 'Thanks' button, after someone thanked me. I'm pretty new to using the site.
I'm off now for a well earned treat. Fish & chips and a cider! First F&C from a chippie in years.
I'll relish every mouthful. Tomorrow, it's back to the freezer.

  • Mmmmm! Enjoy the F&C. Not had that for a while. The last time was probably when you still get them served in newspaper! Yes, that long ago!

  • Afternoon all.

Have to say the fish and chips were a bit of a let down. Last time I bought any they were wrapped in newspaper! No longer, in a fancy cardboard box with fish printed on it. I asked for it to be wrapped so I could take it home, and it was the box was put into a plastic lined bad. All very kind of corporate, as if they were trying to emulate major fast food outlets. Anyhow by the time I got it how, it had all gone soggy, so not very nice.

    However the cider was fab!!!

Money saving tip, I pored half out into a large wine glass and the rest will be quofed with my Sunday dinner, a real chicken kiev (truly a real one) with roasts. I hadn't seen any of those around for years and the other week I saw a box of 2 reduced in a major Supermarket.
    Yum Yum.

    Can anyone fill me in?
I've just updated my signature and found I've got a gold star.
I have been fiddling about with smilies, but can't figure out how I did it. Looks quite nice though, I like stars and often wear them. I'm quite new to posting, only a couple of days and don't really know what I'm doing yet. Still learning how to use the site.
Did I get it for joining the 2010 Crazy Clothes Challenge?
    Thanks

  • Not sure how the stars work tbh, I just got them. I guess it depends on the number of posts and the number of thanks you receive and it's all worked out from there.

sorry to hear the fish & chips were a let down.
