I would never lend her money again. She lied about why she wanted the money.

how do you come to that judgement it doesent say whether she spent the whole 30 quid on scratchcards or whether she brought shopping and used the change at the end of the day you lend somone money they can then do what they want with it ...

A scratchcard is a pound. If she had bought a coffee with it, would people have been sceraming at her for having a coffee addiction. My mum and I tend to buy lucky dips (two separate tickets) and then let the other choose which one they want. If she won a grand and offered to give me £100, I'd be happy. Frankly, I wouldn't care if she didn't - once something is hers, it's hers.

It would have been unlikely that she would have thought about buying a scratchcard and to have bought that exact one with a £1000 prize if she hadn't leant the money to her sister so I'd be really happy to get my £30 back with an extra £100 on top.

To be fair though, I agree she shouldn't have been gambling if she is broke!

  • Ashley should be grateful to get more than 3 times what she lent her sister.

However more concerning is that if Jessica is so broke she has to borrow money from Ashley for shopping then should she really use it for gambling on scratchcards?

Perhaps she needs some counselling on the subject? :D

On a side note I've personally been concerned when I've heard people in the queue at the supermarket kiosk buying lottery tickets or scratchcards remark that it's their benefit money/jobseekers allowance etc. Surely it can't be right that a handout to assist you in getting by on essentials is spent on gambling?

I would expect half to be fair, but at the same time i would of given half too... its family for a start and they were both together at the time, its Ashley's money in the first place, Maybe it was the change from shopping but Jessica would not have been able to get that card unless she had been lent the money from Ashley and should be bloody grateful she's now got £500 to bail her out!

I think you'll find that people on benefits are not spending their own money, they are spending our money that we worked hard to be paid and then handed over to the government to give to 'needy' people NOT GAMBLERS !!!

I think offering her £100 is about right. Would her sister expect half of the coffee she bought or to share half of her make up or clothes that she bought with the money? It was a loan to do with as she likes. If her sister objects to how she spend the loan - she has the option not to lend in future.

As for whether or not she should buy a scratchcard - that's her business. Lots of people buy the odd lucky dip (I probably buy one every month or two on a whim) or scratchcard (personally I never touch them) but it does not mean they have a gambling addiction! Personally, I don't feel I need counselling :p

Those people who say that people who are broke shouldn't gamble have obviously not been in that position themselves. I have, and I bought the occasional lottery ticket as I was desperate to improve my family's situation. Sure its a gamble, but at least you have some hope.
