  • Hi all, just come across a fantastic recipe in a mag (Sausage & Lentils) that I want to try out but one of the ingredients is celery - which I HATE (honestly, I'm not fussy and it's one of less than a handful things that I just can't bring myself to eat:o).

Any suggestions on what I could use instead (or should I just leave out altogether)?

I do have a courgette and wondered if this would do?

    TIA

Just leave it out, I leave garlic out of every recipe as I cannot stand the stuff

It may not taste same as the original recipe, but who cares? It is you who is eating it

  • To be honest, you could probably just leave the celery out. If the recipe doesn't already have onions in it, you could swap some onion in for the celery.

  • Thanks

It does have onion in already .....

I think the celery may also add a bit more colour to it and it may be a bit "dull" without - but hopefully will still taste OK!

  • Hi all.
Having just sent DH out to get some eggs so I can breadcrumb my fishcakes I was wondering if there was an emergency alternative?
Does anyone have any examples of ingenious alternatives to certain ingredients in recipes?
I've used coffee mate in place of dried milk before now cos essentially I figure it's the same thing!
I'd be intrigued to see people's ideas. And who knows it could prove usefull.

For fishcakes, etc that needed breadcrumbs I have dipped them in milk, then cornflour, milk again and finally breadcrumbs, worked ok for me and saves on an egg :money:

I just dip fish in seasoned flour and fry lightly in a little oil. Works a treat.

(Posted on the fennel thread but no replies and I need to go food shopping soon!)

I have a fennel bulb in my veg box this week and I was going to make a gratin with it using double cream - however I was wondering whether I could use Campbell's Cream of Mushroom condensed soup in place of the cream - has anyone ever tried something like this?

    Thanks
