Hi All:hello:

Just thought it might be a useful thread to have where we come specifically to ask for recipe substitutions. The spirit of OS is all about using what we have in our cupboards, rather than going out to buy that ingredient. :j:money:By not going to the shop, we run less risk of unecessary spends, so not only do we save on buying the product, we also save ourselves from impulse buys :Dsmiley-excited001.gif

So if you are making a curry and have no garam masala, or what ever it is, ask in here and someone should be able to advise :D. Means in future all the ideas are kept together, so will hopefully be a good resource over time.

Let me know what yous think . I can think of one or two threads to be merged here already.:A

Some links for substitutes commonly asked for on Old Style: (collated by Pink Winged)

A quick google says it is made from cardamom, cloves, cumin, and cinnamon. If you have these could you attempt making your own? I dontknow about quantities as this is all that was said.

  • Great idea :j

Nuts: Following a recent thread, ground nuts are interchangeable; you can replace almonds with walnuts, hazelnuts, if that's what you have :D

Dried fruit: when making Christmas cake, pudding, or mince meat, calculate the total weight of dried fruit in the recipe, then you can use whatever fruit you like (currants, sultanas, raisins, apricots, cherries, figs, etc) to make that total weight :D

Off to think of some more now :p
