Another thing that limits what I can buy is that some chocolate contains bad ingredients, like Palm Oil for example. Yes I know chocolate is hardly a health food, but some ingredients are just plain bad for your body. So a lot of products that I get recommended from time to time, are only done so due to how they taste; people do not seem aware of anything else!

Not to mention Palm Oil plantations are a major factor in the deforestation of rainforests in places like Brazil/Borneo! :(

Why would the UK care about trees in Brazil when it allowed our own ancient forests to be diminished to just 2% and I don't remember a single person in the UK complaining about that!

Does anyone know if any own brands are pampers as my lo is costing me a fortune!

We use cloth nappies, saved us a fortune over the years and 4 babies. Bought them all second hand (nappies, not babies). We do use disposables for holidays, bad weather, illness etc and I find Lidl, Aldi and Asda perfectly good alternatives to Pampers. If you are a Pampers devotee, try Amazon subscribe and save. Will usually save you money and a whole lot of hassle as the box will be delivered to your door free.
  • Hi,

I used to be a pampers nappy snob until a friend recommended lidls toujor nappies. They are almost the same as Pampers very soft and do not leak.
They have also won netmums gold awards 2011 and 2012.
The best bit is they are £5.19 for 50 Nappies.:j
    Hope that helps
  • My partner used to work for Church & Dwight which makes all Arm & Hammer products and he said that they often used to change the packaging for the toothpaste but would have the same stuff inside, so your Pearl Drops is the same stuff as other Arm & Hammer toothpaste.
  • As a teenager (approx 20 years ago) I worked for a spice company during the summer holidays. We packaged up everything from cinnamon to garlic powder. We did this for loads of different brands including M&S. Of course product itself never changed, just the packaging we were using. The only difference was when we were packing up M&S spices we had to be more careful with the labelling, as if it wasn't all dead centre and perfect they would reject the batch.

Last time I heard the major factor in the deforestation of rainforests in places like Brazil was soya. Time to stop eating tofu? :)

... soya production is now one of the two main causes of deforestation in South America, ...

On the other hand, some people seem to think that growing palm oil in Brazil is a good thing.

Talking about Brasil (which is where Europeans seem to point) I think that this is highly simplistic; it is a bit like saying weapons production is one of the biggest industries in the UK - it is true but a fraction of the truth. I would suggest: (not in particular order)

    - desempregados (unemployed) from the cities and especially the Nordeste (which has poor unreliable rainfall) - subsistance farming
    - Cattle ranching
    - forest products (btw - most Brazil nuts came (come?) from the Amazon basin in Peru)
    - minerals

A problem with crops like soya is that the deforested land is so poor in nutrients that it can only support one, perhaps two crops before it is exhausted. Long lived trees (palm oil perhaps) can usually tolerate such conditions
